What is the failure symptom?

not detected in bios. no sound of drive spinning up.

take off PCB and have a look. SMOOTH chip may burned already.

here is a pic of the board and the top of the drive.

the full number on the bottom of the drive is

Your motor controller chip is damaged.

You will probably need to transplant the 8-pin serial EEPROM chip at location U12 from patient to donor. This is because it stores unique drive calibration data.

wont i be able to just swap in a new board?

No, you need to transfer U12 also.
