Good day,

I have suffered a hard drive failure which caused me to lose years of work. Being a freelancer this is quite a problem. I know I should have backed up.

Thing is i would like to try to get everything back. From the trouble shooting I found that once in a blue moon I can acutally access the drive and try to get stuff off. I got about 2gb of work off before the hard drive just stalls, to bad there is about 100gb of stuff I need to retrieve. I hope the is PCB related so I would like to aquire another one and hopefully recover most of my stuff.

The specs are..

Model number: ST3320620AS
P/N: 9BJ14G-308
Firmware: 3.AAK
Site Code: WU
Date Code: 07325
Capacity: 320GB

Is this enought or is there more information needed.

Also I found similiar HDD available at a online shop. After speaking to the tech he confirmed the following specs.

Just a few questions.
1st. Would it be possible to do a PCB swop without the whole firmware calibration needed?
2nd. If I have these two drives, what would a data recovery center plus minus charge to just swop the discs indside the drives?

You have the wrong idea about how data recovery works. First you need a real DIAGNOSIS of the problem before you just go swapping things around willy-nilly.

I probably don't no, although the drive is picking up perfectly in the BIOS. What happens is that it spins up perfectly when something is trying to interact with the data. Then at a random point it makes the powering down sound and everything stalls. I've actually gone ahead to problem trend this behaviour by searching around for this problem criteria for this exact drive. What I found is that a good amount of people have experienced the same thing. From their experience in rectifying the issue was to replace the PCB as apparently the motocontroller chip or something on the board goes faulty.

So it is at least worth a shot from my side to try to replace the PCB board if this is the issue. Although it depends if the firmware callobration is needed or not. If this is not the issue then I can send those two drives in as last resort for Data Recovery center to resolve the best way they see fit. So will need to know if those two ST3320620AS versions are compatible despite the Date Code and Location Code being different.

Any real responses will be greatly appreciated.

If we share all the knowledge we have with every person with same question about data recovery maybe in 6 mounts every small computer shop makes data recovery for him selfs.
This is not just doing data recovery, not just swap a pcb or heads...
Behind this are a lot of work, time and research, and in some cases thousands of $ $ spent

Maybe you can get your answers but I think you need to show a little bit more respect and try to understand that same times what may seem simple can not be. Because the way you talk we can understand that your knowledge is very limited in this area.

sigh, nvm. Seems I'm just making people angry here. Mainly just wanted to know if the two HDDs are compatible or not. Thanks in any case.

However, I'm almost certain that a board swap won't help you. Nevertheless, if you insist on having a go, then be prepared to transplant the serial EEPROM chip from patient to donor. This chip stores unique drive specific calibration data.
