Made in Thailand. Western Digital External My Book. Thanks. Trying to help myself before going to data recovery company. Trying to save some cost having donor drive before the up sell.

If you are thinking of replacing the head stack on this one you need to think again. Many other things should be tried before you go that route. Was the damage caused by the drive being dropped? What are the symptoms?

I presently have 8 of these very drives in house, working and non working, evaluating the failure mode. These drives require a professional with very good tools. These drives have 8 heads on 4 platters. The firmware requires all 8 heads to read correctly to be able to come ready. You have a 1 in 5 or less chance of getting a head stack that will do you any good. The heads that are in it, if the preamp is still ok are your very best bet for recovery. I am not sure what the professional tools such as the PC3000 has to offer for this drive but unless you can get it to report ready you can not even begin to clone the sectors.

Thanks for the info. I was using it as I normally have for the last four years and all of a sudden there was six distinctive clicks and the drive shut down. I unplugged the drive picked it up to see if something internally loose. I can hear the platters free spinning, like a vinyl record being rubbed with a finger. I've shopped around for a local data recovery, it seems that the components of the head stack is what is needed for any hope of recovery.
