Hi,

I have Toshiba MK2049GSY HDD2E11 B UK01 T disk and my assumption is that problem is in the board, considering the way how the disk stopped working. I ordered over eBay a new disk, same model number, but unfortunately it didn't work when I swapped boards. I suppose it doesn't work because my original disk is Toshiba MK2049GSY HDD2E11 B UK01 T and the new one is HDD2E11 C ZL01 T (one chip on new board is the different or the problem is in the firmware). Attached are photos of my original disk.

Let me explain how did (I) burn the board. I ordered over eBay some IDE/SATA to USB adapters. Adapter worked OK with IDE 2.5" and 3.5" disks, but when I plugged this Toshiba 2.5" SATA disk, I heard some short burning sound. I guess power supply rating of adapter was not OK for this disk. Also, power supply of this adapter uses 4 pin molex to SATA power connector, and molex side has only 3 "live" pins. Basically, it has +5V or +12V and one GND. Since my disk is newer, maybe it uses different power source, it is more "sensitive" and that burned it?

Anyway, attached you will find photos of the disk. I have marked the only part on the board that is different comparing the new disk that I ordered.

Any suggestion is highly appreciated.
In advance, thanks for any help.

Slaven

P.S.

Is it allowed to have link in the signature because last time my topic was approved but when I went to check it, it doesn't exist. Maybe it was banned because link in my signature?

IC602 is the ROM that needs to be swapped if the PCBs are compatible and only PCB is your problem. I am not sure if your boards are compatible as the models are a bit different (UK01 T vs ZL01 T).

Well, when I put new PCB board to "burned" disk, the disk was spinning and that would suggest that head, plates and rest of the disk is probable OK. Only noticeable different part on new PCB, comparing old burned PCB, is the circled element on the attached photo. Of course, since the ROM on new PCB is different, the disk didn't work properly.

Whit which certainty can you tell me, if I take ROM from old burned PCB and put it on new PCB that original disk will work? Is there anything else I should take care about? But I would be happier if I could find exact working PCB whit the same markings - HDD2E11 B UK01 T. I am almost sure that would bring me success....
This way, if I go the way of swapping ROM's, I might even loose the new disk too...

Yes, that is true. PCB's are different and as long as I could see, only difference is in that ROM. On attached photo is the original PCB for which I assume it is burned. When I put new PCB to original disk, disk was spinning, but it was not functional. This is the reason why I think that head and plates and rest of the disk are OK, and probable only PCB board is burned.

What do you think if I swap that ROM from "burned" PCB to new PCB, could that solve the problem?
What is the certainty that this solution could work, because that way I could potentially destroy PCB of new working donor disk :( Or maybe firmware is also important, not only just ROM swapping?
To be honest, I would be happiest if I could find exact the same PCB that has same signs - HDD2E11 B UK01 T. I believe with the same PCB chance is 99% for this disk to work, without any firmware issues...What do you think?
