I'm a newbie here, and also not a pro in hdd repairs ...

Have been dabling in computer repairs - building - fixing - etc etc on a strict
amatur basis for some time I realy know the value of forums
like this. Where gurus from around the world can give help and hope to people like me.
Who's trying to help my neighbour and other friends and relatives to a better computer experience.

So, the problem I am having is the mentioned hdd from Western Digital. It quit working - looking under the
pcb a small point is melted on the insulation on the Q2 chip ...

I need therefore a similar working pcb for this drive, but know of the U12 chip issue. I have not enough skills
or tools to replace this chip. Nor is there any shop close by who is capable of helping me on this point.
Norway being a small country et all.

Anyone can point me to where I can get this fixed?

(Sorry my bad english)

Be advised that there are companies in the USA that will supply a board, and transfer the EEPROM, for US$50 in total, postage included. That should be your target price.

Thank you fzabkar for a fast reply ...

Ohh yes - that is more down to earth - trouble is for me to find and get in contact with those firms.

Anyone with an adress - url - or how to get in contact, please feel free to tip me off.

Regards from Norway

(where the lowest quote for a hdd data recovery - not what I had in mind - is from us$1000 upwards.
As I said, I am trying a hdd repair.)

Here is an update ...

I bought one pcb from one user here - it was broken - one (two) capasitors were burnt of the board,
pos c79 (also c75 alongside) so there is no power to the spindle ...
Bummer

Spending more good money on fedex et al is no go! (the cost of sending is to up to 300% the cost of the pcb.)

Trying another solution then ...
Putting on another pcb from a almost twin hdd makes the spindle to turn an the heads to move!
Trouble is, the interface on that pcb is pata, the original is sata.
My question then is;
will moving the famous u12 chip make it possible to read the disk and get the data off it?
Or am I just being stupid ...

Hi,

2060-701265-001 rev a(IDE, PATA), 2060-001265-001 rev a(IDE, PATA), 2060-701266-001 rev a(IDE, PATA), 2060-001266-001 rev a(IDE, PATA), 2060-701267-001 rev a(SATA), 2060-001267-001 rev a(SATA). These PCB could be used interchangeable when you swap the 8pins BIOS rom chip.

We did the tested and sold to some clients before(One of the clients is from Netherlands), if the HDD is a PCB problem. It works fine no matter IDE or SATA. Hope the message is helpful for you.

Thanks
Eric

Thank you Eric ...

Just moving over that U12 chip from the burnt SATA PCB to another EIDE PCB did the it.

All data recovered!

Thanks also to all who had the time and resources to answer my plea for help ...

Best regards from 'bestedad' :D
