Wanted : WD Mybook World Edition NAS : WD5000G032 : PCB Dead

Hello,

I have been using the Western Digital MyBook World Edition 500GB NAS (Network Attached Storage) for quite some time. I did upgrade the internal 500GB harddisk to a 1TB harddisk successfully and it was working fine for almost 2 years now.

However recently it has been giving my trouble by not initializing the internal attached SATA Harddisk. When the internal harddisk is initialized (after around 3 minutes of powering on the drive) then the blue rings light of the NAS enclosure become lit. I have checked the power adapter and it is working fine.

The current condition is that after connecting the power adapter the harddisk never initializes and makes very light sweeping and spinning noise (as if it is trying to start up) but never actually gains the full spindle speed and continues on in the same loop forever.

I opened the NAS enclosure and tried putting the harddisk to a normal USB enclosure and the harddisk is perfectly working fine, it did initialize and perform correctly in the other enclosure, which indicated that the problem is in the NAS enclosure. It seems like it is somehow unable to provide the complete power to initialize and spin the harddisk, strange cause i never had a power surge or spike. It remained running for 24/7 , thats why maybe some power related component on the PCB got overheated.

So I am looking for Western Digital MyBook World Edition 500GB NAS Enclosure only or its PCB as a replacement. The details of the harddisk model are as follows :

PCB Model: WD PCBA 2061-7014900-003
Ordering Part Number : 1NC72038906
Part Number :WU1NC0038906
Model No : WD5000G032

I would appreciate if anyone can offer any sort of guidance about how to recover my current PCB or any sales offer to buy an enclosure or PCB only.

Thanks for reading and your input.

Thanks ,

I was able to troubleshoot and make WD MyBook working again. The problem was not with the PCB but the power adapter. Although the power adapter light was lit and when checked via multi-meter it was showing 12V as output, it was not able to spin the harddisk to properly initialize and start it. The problem was detected by an electrical engineer friend of mine who concluded that even though I think that the power adapter switching power supply) is working, actually it is not able to supply required amperes on load conditions (that is when the harddisk draws power to start spinning the spindles).

He opened the adapters he was easily able to identify the capacitors which were visibly inflated, maybe due to prolonged use or any power spike/surge. The swollen capacitors were unsolder-ed and new compatible capacitors were soldered again to the power adapter board and voila....the NAS was restored to life.

Same was also applied to revive another Seagate FreeAgent 500 GB power adapter, which was showing exactly the same behavior of not power up the attached harddisk properly.

Shared here for common understanding and community benefit, so others can check their power supplies as well before assuming that any harddisk and/or its PCB has stopped working.

Thanks.

Hi AlterEgo,
the HDD inside my WD MyBook (the same as your model) it's broken.
After some test I came to the conclusion: the problen is the PCB of the hard disk.
Do you have available your old WD5000AASK hard disk?
Can you rent me?
I want only to recover my data, then I give back it to you.
All details are in attachement.

Hi, We have this working PCB in stock for sale, however, for this kinds of PCB, rom have been integrated into the main chip, so I think it is little hard to manage by personal.

Thanks
Eric
