I had loads of Toshiba's in for recovery last year, and not one of them needed heads. They all had their on issues but none of them needed head swaps. Am I just lucky or do you guys have (mostly) the same experience with them?

Toshibas are VERY tolerant. Bad their heads get screwed as with all other drives.
Personally i LOVE toshibas :)

Thanks a lot guys. I'll try to fix the firmware.
Maybe it's not the heads.

Scratching sounds heard when the drive is spinning.

Think I do not have the skills and tools to handle this case yet. Have passed on to a professional data recovery centre. Thanks for asking, PCimage, and all those who chipped in.
