I would please love a bit of help. I smoked out my PCB after I plugged in a DC rather an AC. There was no smell from the Drive as it comes on and shows as drive connected on OS but I cannot access it. After a few consultations with almost 5 specialists, I was told to get.a replacement board but unfortunately I cannot seem to find either the HDD as they no longer manufacture it nor the PCB, which then led me to this forum. The HDD in question is detailed below,

Some WD10EACS drive pcb have the same PCB, but you ll need pro tool to moove rom content to new pcb, cause no U12 (if my memory is good)

i doubt your Drive have PCB Issue need more information..................... if the Drive is Detecting in Os it means PCB is fine (can u check Drive is showing Right Capacity,Model & Serial Number)...

Need more info as exactly how the drive behaves.

Regardless of that, 701590-000 is a very common pcb, I could find 100's in just one minute.

so does the hard drive say the correct information name model etc

its also possible it might had damaged the headstack

with regards to the samsung HDD, Actually i took The HDD out of its enclosure and mounted it on an external docking station but unfortunately it comes up with nothing on the screen and its not even spinning. No info came up on the screen whatsoever???

with regards to this PCB, i discovered that even if you get the right PCB you still need the right firmwire to make that particular HDD work. Therefore i investigated further that those HDD (Western Digitals) have a diode just by the power pin that burns out immediately after a wrong power cable is plugged in in order to protect the board so once taken out you can with a docking station still get to your drives. Gonna try it out though as i am not 100% sure about this.

Things are not quite that simple - sometimes other components are affected too. Also, if the diode was your problem, you would not expect to have the behaviour where it "shows as drive connected on OS" (as microsoftengineer explained). Unfortunately your descriptions has not been clear & detailed enough to fully understand (as northwind said). Also, you just started to mention Samsung, yet previously you said the drive was WD. You are confusing readers by changing your story like that.

So based on your description that it "shows as drive connected on OS", I doubt that your drive has the simple TVS diode problem which you mention. However with a confusing and unclear story, anything is possible. If you want to read more about the diodes which you mentioned, search on the forum for TVS. If you decide to do some DIY as you say, then I wish you good luck, but remember that depending on what you actually do, you could make things worse (perhaps much worse), and could make any possible later recovery more expensive / less successful / perhaps impossible. Your data, your risk, your responsibility, your choice.

Thanks for the swift reply and sorry for the confusing state of things. Let me be much clearer that there are 2 HDD's in question. The first one happens to be a samsung 500GB model (HD501LJ) date (03/2007), PCB (BF41-00133A Trident 11-RE Rev06). This hard drive shows on the OS without any access. It powers with the casing but totally quiet and not happen to be spinning either.

The second hard drive is a western digital (WD10EADS) date (31/may/2009) PCB (2060-701590-000 REVA). Now this hard drive had a funny smell when wrong power source was plugged in. Opening it up and removing the PCB, the diode close to the connector on the right hand corner (picture attached) looks burnt. This is where my reasearch came in that it was the diode that needed replacement.

The problem could be as simple as a shorted TVS diode, in which case just remove it and make sure you don't overvolt your drive again.

We have this PCB.

This PCB's BIOS is integrated on the Main Controller IC. You should exchange the Main Controller IC to let the HDD be recognized. Move the Main Controller IC(the biggest chip on the board) is a complex job which need you have certain techique. Some electronics repair shop can do it.

Thank you guys for your input fortunately, I was able to retrieve the files after removing the "TVR" diode which shunted the circuit board and I have there fore replaced it not the drives are as good as new. And to @fzabkar the link you provided was of a huge help understanding those diodes.

I guess I just saved myself 400 quid of data extraction
