What is the problem of the original drive?

problem is, that the PCB on the old disc is damaged...
if the disc is plugged smells burnt...

First you need to check if preamp is alive.
These WD boards have the most stupid design in history of electronics and there is no overvoltage protection. Meaning that it's very likely that the preamp is dead too.
Post a good quality picture of the PCB's component side.
