I have a Western Digital 1Tb My Book Pro 2, ideally I guess I need two?

The usual chain of events has led me here along with many of the "1 posters", hoping to recover my data without spending a grand, maybe that is the way to go since it seems trying to find working drives with matching numbers seems like the needle in a haystack. I'm hoping I can just swap the controller boards or that's what I've been told by several people....I'm reading up here and trying to educate myself. I just want my data back!

Well, it depends entirely on what the problem is. If it's simply corrupted data, the right software will do the trick, where a new PCB won't.

It's funny, I've seen some people spend a small fortune trying to save money.

This is usual behaivor of the people.
They are willing to spend $50.00, trying to save $200.00, but end up paying $1000.00 because they messed up badly.

The problem isn't corrupted data, that assumption is off, the drive clicks and doesn't mount. The few IT folks I know said that it could be symptomatic of a controller board failure and to "just swap boards", so it seemed to make some sense to consider a stab at it. Calling the various data recovery services has also been pretty educational as is this site, I'm not at all trying to pretend I know much at all about any of this and I realize it's more complicated than "just swap boards". I am considering using a data recovery service and hope their $100 estimate won't cost more than a grand, there aren't any $200 options afaik but I'm all ears. Back to the newb sticky for me.
