I have two atolas and for some reason both units port 2 fails to r/w, what could it cause this?

OK, now it is clear. The problem caused the error was already fixed in Atola Insight Forensic 4.5. You may download it if you have an active subscription: http://atola.com/products/insight/download.html

What made Port 2 stop working? the 4.4 update?

Yes, speed improvements in 4.4. However, the problem is not that critical as it would seem at first sight. It is only 'Fill or Erase' function that fails for Port 2. Imaging to Port 2 properly works in 4.4.
