I replaced the pcb board with a correct donor, first 2 lines of sticker on pcb board. I connect the pcb board to the patient hard drive, start up the HD Doctor for Hitachi and the drive starts clicking... Originally the patient drive came up ready, but when I select load from hdd i get "Error". Spoke with Salvation Data and the techs said it was pcb, I ordered a hard drive and pcb board that matched according, first 2 lines on the sticker. I thought about trying a hot swap, but I read some postings that said it was not recommendable. Any ideas? Can the pcb and the heads of a drive be both bad? or could it be that the pcb is not the proper match. I also read something about a configuration of the drive being stored in a chip on the pcb and needs to be transferred to the donor pcb.. Anybody?

You don't have to backup all of your files, just the ones you want to keep.

You will have to move the NVRAM, as fzabkar said, before the board will be compatible. You should be safe to try the NVRAM swap, if you have the soldering skills necessary. But, I'd question the original diagnosis of the PCB being the point of failure. It certainly won't hurt to rule it out or confirm that it is the problem, but there is a chance that you have a bigger can of worms.

Yes, you can have both a bad PCD and bad heads.

If this is a client's drive, you might want to outsource this project to another lab who can properly diagnose and get your client's data back safely and play with your own drives until you are sure you aren't risking your client's data.

Originally the drive would spin up and become ready, but when you used the load from HDD an error would show. I purchased a pcb with the first exact 2 lines of the pcb board, tried the pcb board and the drive would start clicking. That´s when I thought it might be heads, I used an option in HD Doctor NVRAm update and used the nvram from the pcb I purchased and was able to get the pcb from the bad drive to start working. That´s why I think it is the heads are bad...

I hope you saved the NVRAM from the "bad" PCB before you overwrote it?
