I have a WD400BB-00CFC0 with firmware problems. I can read out all firmware mods except for 17 (ROM overlay) and 23 and 25 (Defect Map). From what I understand, 23 in particular is very critical and cannot come from a donor file. Is it possible to recreate this mod from one of the others or is this drive a goner?

If all other modules are fine, I would not give up on it.

Update - after the words of encouragement from harddrivespecialist, I looked more closely at the data that my tools were reading out for mods 23 and 25. Both were reading out only a portion of each firmware mod. So, I took what was there and merged that into a donor mod file of the correct size and uploaded both. After a translation generation, all the data is accessible and drive is imaging now.

One of the toughest aspects of doing DR sometimes is knowing whether something is a lost cause or not. Hats off to harddrivespecialist for his helpful reply.
