Hi,
Has anyone had a Maxtor SATA that they could not put into safe mode? I was given an explanation for boot problem I am having (HD boot) that "Not every Maxtor SATA disk can set to safe mode successful." Comments?
Thanks.

All SATA Maxtors can be put in safe mode
Unfortunately knowing that wouldn't help you because apparently SD support doesn't know how to do that and I have no desire to share this info

Yes they can be set to safe mode. What Maxtor drive are you attempting this with, and what diagnostic equipment are you using?

John

Thanks Doomer. I figured as much, but I dont think they would listen to me.
John it is a Maxtor 6V300F0, and I am using HD Doctor.

Ok so I have lost a lot of sleep trying to sort this out. I did test on 7 Maxtors (safemode boot), all PATA. Only the Sabre have issue booting. Here is what happens. Load boot, load rom, at which point HD spins up. It should not happen until step, HD reset.
So please let me know if there is something special in the way Sabre to be booted. Is it possible safemode or boot process not handeled properly for these drives?
Thanks.

Are you attaching anything to the 4-pin jumpers on these SATA Maxtor drives?
April 19th, 2011, 10:38
Yes. I connect HD Doctor to two of the 4 pins. I assume they are Tx & Rx. Connections are correct, at least per manual (I check and recheck). By the way, issue seems to be with sabre in general, having similar problems with PATA. Read a much earlier post by a well known guru where is seems PC-3000 at one time did not have support due to loader loading procedure being changed for sabre 2 and others (not sure about sabre). Maybe this is the issue with HD Doctor?

hi
i had a sbare pata in these days for a job and had no problem with loader.
Both PC3K UDMA and SD doctor made the drive spin after rom loading ... so looks normal.
For SD i did as follows:
SAFE MODE JUMPER
LOAD BOOT FILE
LOAD ROM ... WAIT FOR THE DRIVE TO SPIN UP
TRY TO READ ID (BOTTOM SIDE OF THE WINDOW NOT LOAD FROM HDD)
i had 2 difefrent behaviour with SA mostly corrupted still detected as sabre after repairing some modules was detected simply loading ROm and full SA access
CHECK THE MODULES AND USE "POWER LOAD MOD"
that's all, fome me worked hope this will help you
Bye
Luca

Thanks Luca. One of the problems is that HD spins after "Load Rom", which should not happen until "Rest HD". By the way this only happnes for sabre, the others did not spin until HD reset. I tried Power Load, still having issues. Trying to isolate problem, but I will need some more sabre to play around with. Were you able to get your HD working?

yes i had full SA access and i could repair the corrupted modules.

Ok, still trying to get this going. Anyone can tell me if loading SA parameter mod should be part of manual boot process? There has to be a problem with the way this unit handles SATA drives. Luca, I noticed your drive was PATA, if you or anyone else gets SATA Sabre 2 drive in, please try the boot procedure with it after alias problem. Thanks.

Sabre2 are nasty drives. I get the feeling even if you get this going through SD you will not get so far with the data recovery...

Why is that? I sould have some by the weekend to experiment with. This drive is mine nothing too important, have backup maybe missing a few days. I just dont like giving up with problem especially when I have the time (i.e. customer not waiting) to do so.

So still working on this drive, no surprise considering what I am using. I have so many different post on the same drive its not funny

. Anyway, could someone please tell me what I need to find matching PATA drive for this, 6V300F0 (VA111630, V60)? Thanks.

fzabkar thanks for the link. Something tells me this wont be straight forward, and I am going to have to experiment.

I will most likely edit the article by ACELAB's standards. Every correction which I got was contradicting to one another.
