Data Compass PSU

Hi,

I have a data compass which I got second hand the PSU works but rattles.
The original PSU input is 100-240V, 1.5A, 50-60Hz
output is 19V 3.42A
I have a possible replacement PSU which I found & just wanted to confirm its ok to use & wont damage the data compass
Replacement PSU input 100-240V, 2.0A, 50-60Hz
output 19V, 3.42A

Am i correct in thinking as the output is the same (& connector) this should be fine to use?

I don't own a DC, but although this is probably a suitable replacement, there are two other things I'd check:

- polarity of centre contact on the output power connector (centre positive on both?).
- is that listed output voltage definitely regulated on both? It probably is (these sound like typical laptop PC power supplies), but the last thing you want is to find that the replacement PSU output voltage is 30V (or whatever) under light load, and the input capacitors of the DC are only rated at 25V (for example).

Just trying to be helpful with a couple of thoughts, purely from an electronics perspective Feel free to ignore etc.

Dear Loki,
As an electronic technician for many years, I would say that the replacement power supply should be ok. As Vulcan said, checking the polarity of the output jack is a good idea to confirm that it is the same as the original. If you have a digital voltmeter, check the output. I recently purchased a new Data Compass Standard and the power supply that was shipped with it looks like an Acer laptop power supply. The input of my power supply is rated at 100-240V, 1.6A, 50-60Hz
and the output is 19V 3.42A. As a side note, the Data Compass should be protected with some type of overvoltage surge protection, if it is designed correctly. It only takes a few zener diodes for such protection. Most modern circuits are designed this way to protect the components from getting damaged from overvoltage surges. Hard drive circuit boards contain a 12 volt and 5 volt zener diode to protect the circuitry from voltage surges from the computers power supply.

i already changed those adapters you can use a standard laptop adapter as said by the Vulcan and Alan2 simply check polarity.
