The HD Doctors are mobile if one uses an external power adapter for them.
Who would like to carry a pc power supply in a case?
I found out, that one has to use at least a power adapter with 3Ampere,
otherwise i.e. Maxtor drives wont start.

I took an external power adapter from a LaCie enclosure, it has 5V / 4.2A
and 12V / 3A, which works fine. Cut the end off and soldered the pins to
a power connector (for IDE HDD).

A few weeks ago I got some surge protectors from forum member N.C.
It saved allready one of the HD Doctors: As the DC in and the DC out
connectors on that tools are identical, I connected in a hurry my power
adapter to the wrong side - thank God, I had that surge protector inbetween
the two fuses where dead, but the HD Doctor is still alive.

1,- Euro for replacement of the two fuses and a little soldering - and it works
fine again.

Have a look at this ... Had no problems powering Maxtor, Seagate, WD, and all others .. Never used it on SD tools, but cant see why it would'nt work. you can shove it in your pocket and its a lot lighter than an PC power supply

scratchy, Sorry, but these adapters are for no use for HD Doctors. The HD Doctors request together with the hdd sometimes at least 3 Ampere. Therefore one either connects HDD Doctors to a PC power supply or to a small power adapter (same as for these USB-device, but stronger). There is no need for this specific USB-device, as HD Doctors are themselves USB devices where the HDD will be connected to directly with a standard IDE cable (SATA drives with IDE to SATA adapter). +++

You should use to power out molex from Data Compas to power your hard drive - even use it to power into your HD Doctor and then to your hard drive. Use the supplied power pack (19volt 3.42 (2.5mm + polarity)) I used an external power supply and completely fried one hard drive(could not recover data)- Data Compass has built in short protection, over/under voltage and surge protection. If you hear an annoying beeping sound when trying to power up your HDD check connection and the PCB if there is no short on +5/+14 <> GND and all the other obvious stuff..
