Determining the HDD Family

January 13th, 2012, 7:06

Hi Guys,

I've been testing HD Doctor for Hitachi and I was wondering what the software meant by 'HDD Family'. The Family codes do not match up to anything on the Hard Drive so I was wondering if there was a website to determine which family my drive belongs to?

Many Thanks,
DR

test a working drive, e.g hts541680j9sa00 connect to hitachi doctor, click "load from hdd", the hdd family will choose the corresponding model automatically. it is known as "5416" family, based on hts5416xxxxxx you can also check the manual to determine the correct model if you are unsure

based on above test, you can find out what model of drive you are dealing with (i assume you are dealing with one) and choose "load from file", find a compatible *.res with it.

one peculiarity might happen if the drive is not supported yet by hitachi doctor, it will not show up in the hdd family panel even the drive is fully functional

Thanks for the reply.

We are attempting to read from HTS547575A9E384, it's quite a new model and when we attempt to load from HDD, the software does nothing, i presume as you say, this is down to the fact that HD Doctor is yet to support this model.

Unless there could be another reason, what do you advise? What do you mean by .res file?

Thanks

DR

that model should be "5475" family, which is not supported yet i'm afraid.

res file = resource file, these files are located in "res" folder within hitachi doctor folder.

what is the problem with drive ?

The drive spins, but makes two fairly quiet cluncking sounds, but after that seems fine.

You can report the hard drive info from Data Compass but the firmware seems to be fine.

I.E. On the front sticker it looks like this:

HW/FW/PCB: A A50A A/A

On Data compass it says its: JE40A50A

But you can't view sectors, I admit in HD Doctor you can read the 12v and 5v lines and they are fluctating quite extensively. Which could point to bad heads. Anyway, thought we'd try for firmware diagnosis first.

Cheers
