Hello

I have a problem with a disk, with family photos and videos. (right in the picture)
Disk not spin, not noise....
This HDD is from father, he doesn't know about backups...

To solve it, with time and patience, I have found another disk with the same serial number PCB in order to exchange. (left in the picture).

This bought disk works fine.

I exchange the pcb but still does not noise or spin.

I have checked the voltage in the motor area, and disk that works, the 4 points of the motor are with 6v.

Could it be a motor problem?

Can you give me a guide or steps to follow, or suggestions ...

I need help, they are photos and videos with sentimental value.

Thank you

Xesx

Does the donor PCB still work on the donor drive?

The drive appears to have an internal fault.

Hi,
Not sure internal problem. How to check it?
If I measure voltage motor, at working one, it have 6v.
But fault disk are 0v.
What IC is in charge to give voltage to the motor,
internal side of disk or external pcb?
Thank you

Faulty right PCB have one IC that is not at working PCB
Do you know about it?
Thank you

It's a ROM. The other PCB embeds the ROM code within the MCU. AIUI, in order for the two PCBs to be compatible, the ROM code needs to match, or at least be compatible.

There may be another explanation, but I'm not a data recovery pro, so I may be wrong. Perhaps your donor PCB is detecting an incompatible preamp (on the headstack) and refusing to spin up.

The motor controller IC is the second largest square chip (in the corner).

If you want to measure some supply voltages, measure the D2118 transistor adjacent to the motor controller, and the two SOT89 packages near the motor connector (one is to the left of the ROM). You can do this with the PCB off the drive.

I need you to measure the voltages at Q1, Q2 and Q3.

Also measure the resistance of R5 (R47) near the Molex power connector.

Somewhere in between the two "100" coils, at one of the capacitors, you should measure -5V.

Hi
Thanks for explanation, will be welcome.
I take some measures of voltage, on some points.
I attach picture.
If need more measures, pls tell me I do.

Maybe if exchange some IC form donor can be a way?
I can do it.
Thank you again

It looks like your motor controller may be dead.

Measure the voltages at V1, V2, V3.

Also measure the voltages at the capacitors in the Cuk converter.

Use any screw hole as your ground reference.

Hi fzabkar
Thanks at all.

I measure and write it on the pictures.
Maybe I bought 6 disk looking for similar PCB that my family disk.
If Malaysia 0A30502 is wrong, I can change It from other donor.
But question is, can be other component that make damage to new Malaysia ? , of course under your opinion.
What can we check to avoid it?

It's strange 0v at top 100coil?
Because I check with other working PCB and have -3,2v.
This coil is manage by Malaysia?
I touch some components and temperature is normal, not hot.
Thank you very much

It does appear that the motor controller is dead.

Measure the resistances of the motor windings. There are 3 phases. One terminal is common, the other 3 are the phases. The phase-to-phase resistance should be twice the phase-to-common resistance. The resistances should be close to 1 or 2 ohms.

Hi fzabkar

Motor:
Phase to phase are 3,3 ohm
Phase to common are 1,7 ohm.
Motor maybe will be ok.

Let me ask your opinion from your knowledge:
Malaysia 030502 are the problem?
What is the steps to check from Malaysia IC before give the motor power?
If exchange from donor, can be other component that damage new Malaysia donor?
Have be documented this Malaysia IC system works and pin-out?
Next step are change Malaysia donor?

Thank you very much again.

Hi
About ROM:
if we attach ROM from faulty PCB to donor PCB?
Thank you

I don't know whether an external ROM takes precedence over an internal ROM, so I can't answer that question. Sometimes you can change the boot source via configuration resistors, but I don't know in your case.

It bothers me that your donor PCB doesn't spin up your drive. Can you try isolating the HDA connector from the 22 pads at J2 on the other side of the PCB? This will disconnect the PCB from the preamp. Then see if the donor PCB will spin up the drive.

If the drive spins up with J2 disconnected, then we can test the preamp for short circuits. Start by measuring the Cuk section on the donor PCB and look for a -5V test point. This will be the negative supply for the preamp. Then install the donor PCB on the patient drive and measure the resistance between the -5V test point and ground. Also measure the resistance between the R47 resistor (R5) and ground. This is the +5V supply for the preamp.

HI,

Drive spins up with J2 disconnected on patient disck and donor pcb.
I check follow your, attached picture.
I don't find -5v, maximal is -3v , motor run with 6v at phases.
I try with original pcb patinent disk and J2 disconnect, but no changes...
pls, tell me more checks if need.
Malaysia is the generator of -3v ?

Thank you.

Yes, -3V seems to be correct for this model. Other drives have -5V.

334 ohms is not a short circuit, so I don't understand why the preamp prevents the drive from spinning. Do you measure the same resistances at the +5V and -3V test points on your donor HDD? If so, then the preamp is probably OK.

Can you measure these voltages on your patient and donor? I don't understand what this section does.

Hi
this are measures from both pcb.
"Do you measure the same resistances at the +5V and -3V test points on your donor HDD?"
DONOR PCB GND/R47(R5) 5v--> 15,2 KΩ
PATIENT PCB GND/R47(R5) 5v--> 14,9 KΩ
DONOR PCB GND/C11 -3v --> 391 Ω
PATIENT PCB GND/C11 -3v --> 0,398 KΩ
PATIENT PCB
V5=5,25V
V4=0,619V
V7=0v
V6=0V
DONOR PCB
V5=5,06V
V4=3,3V
V7= 0V
V6= -3,V
Thank you

U8 could be a 3.3V LDO regulator that is enabled by the motor controller IC (U3). If you are good at soldering, you could try replacing U3. Otherwise purchase a compatible donor and transfer U5 (NVRAM). If the firmware versions are mismatched, you will need to transfer U7 (ROM) as well. You must not damage U5. It contains unique drive specific data.
