HDD platter swap , is it possible?

March 22nd, 2019, 11:08

Greetings everyone,

I have a Seagate ST500DM002 internal HDD wich was opened, and accidently the platter was scratched.

Therefore i want to swap that platter with another unused one of the same exact model:
- Is it worth a try or would it not work?

-I heard that the controller also have some informations stored in as the Serial number , HDD Type....would it be an issue?

-Is there a way to detect that a platter swap have been done , i.e does the platter hold some informations other than user data? like the ones in the controller concerning specs of the hard (serial number as well....) so that the swap would be detected

If any experienced geek can answer those questions i would be very thankfull , because frankly i'm a newbie in this field.

Thanks.

Why would you want to?

Why would you want to take a platter out of a perfectly good drive rendering is useless, to put it in another hard drive that has already failed with little chance of success. Unless this is just for fun.

With respect, this is so wrong on so many levels.

In the words of Edmund Blackadder “it’s like fitting wheels to a tomato”... extremely difficult and totally pointless!

very well said.

BTW if platter has scratch its already game over, why waste time and money.
On the other hand if data is very critical, contact a decent Pro to see if partial data can be extracted.

The 'why' is a very unending philosophical question , why even make a forum ? why anything, it's better to accept things how they are just because....

The 'How' is more important.

So if technically it is impossible ,i guess the first question was answered.

Now theorically speaking is there a relationship between the platter and the controller for that exact model?
or platter is a replica without an identifier ,
i.e the two last questions.

Thank you very much.

Your concept of how a hard drive works is so insanely oversimplified it's not even worth the effort to attempt explaining it to you. What you're asking is like the equivalent of asking:
"Is there a relationship between brain and body? Theoretically, can a brain swap work?"

You think a neurosurgeon is going to waste his time trying to explain all the technicalities of the interrelationship and difficulty of what you're purposing is? No, because there's a ton of information you need to know before you'd even understand what he's saying.

I could type you a book about the technicalities of service area adaptives, servo patterns, sector translation, and the likes, and how it all relates to the difficulty of moving platters from one drive to another, but you won't understand any of it.

i think this hard drive has single platter. user data stored in this platter. so what is your expecting use this new platter.

between pcb and platter has unique info. they linked.
-------------------------

100% your hdd working like this

you get donor PCB, platter, heads, magnets, filter and motor from donor drive and transplant all of them to your paitent drive. it is working 100% for sure. if you like old serial number you can use patient lid. otherwise you can use donor lid.

don't forget use the clean room.

according to your original post i feel like this.
" you have a customer hard drive and it has been damaged now. now you want to replace the platter. but now you have a doubt that customer will recognize it. "

if your problem is like this then good DR person can identify.

if my assume is totally wrong, million times SORRY.

I really hope google translate had a glitch and twisted the meaning of this conversation.

As i mentioned i'm not questionning the success of the operation technically just in theory is there a relation between platter and controller , it's simple isn't it?

I heard there is a SYSTEM AREA in the platter wich may contain informations identifying the hdd such as the SN.

Re: HDD platter swap , is it possible?

March 26th, 2019, 8:35

Yes there is a relation. End of discussion.

Re: HDD platter swap , is it possible?

So basically is the serial number part of them?

I mean if einstein could simplify his theory of relativity in two principles without explaining it furthermore : relativity and constant speed of light, than you should be able to determine the basic informations stored there.

Otherwise there a way to be sure all data in the platter are erased physically , (because i can't wipe it ) also without leaving damage on the platter, i know it's already damaged but i want to be sure all data is erased and can't be recovered.

Get a hammer and smash platters to pieces, best data destruction method, no chance of recovering any data.

As tempting as it is but i can't do that i have to leave the platter intact without visible damage.

How about degaussing, but i can't afford buying a degausser :) , so what the best magnet i can use at home.

at hddguruknight

you are so wrong. don't distroy customer data. it maybe a trouble even his life. you think that customer is a wedding photographer. how he face his customer. you are going to ruin his whole career. beside his life memory can be there inside.
now you have done a mistake. so pls. stop doing further damage. you contact professionl DR and they will get data of other side of platter. how customers belive you.

beside we can't give even a small technical info for destroying CUSTOMER VALUBLE DATA.

we all have a responsibility to save customer data.

Look like he's trolling. To kill a drive is easy, I think he already did.

This is data recovery forum not data destruction.
