Samsung 860 EVO SSD 1 TB over voltage repair

Hi Folks,
I made the mistake of swapping power supplies in two of my pc's, a evga 850w with a evga 1000w, and switched all cables except sata. The result overvolted 2 of my 860 evo 1 tb ssd's. Yes now I know I should have paid attention to the manual to always use original cables, but I thought since same manufacturer it would be fine (it would be nice of evga to prevent future user error by changing their form factors for the differing cables). I have read a couple posts here of similar situation with 850 evo ssd where replacing the e-fuse with a STEF4S repaired the drive. I have been trying to identify the efuse on the 860 but the layout is a bit different from the 850. Any guidance is appreciated, I would like to get these drives operable again. Fortunately I had nearly all important files backed up in the cloud, but still some I would like to retrieve. I have a few STEF4S ic's already ordered if they turn out necessary.

I don't see any burn damage and there was no smoke nor smell, just the drives could not be recognized by bios. Thanks for your help.

You can bypass it with a wire link by connecting Vin to Vout, with caveats.

Success! It wasn't easy to solder the wire, but at least there are 3 vins and 3 vouts. Thank you again fzabkar, many blessings to you in this life and the next.

Interesting, that the 2nd evo 860 drive I hotwired had a much different pcb layout but I was able to identify the efuse.

Find the datasheet for the STEF4S and the bridge the Vin and Vout pins, if there is no other damage.

Hi after all, i need a little help, i guess you can support me

I find this post very interesting, i have a samsung evo 860 250gb that stop to work from one day to another, the bios doesn´t recognise the ssd, i make some measures and i found many shorts in the board, i show you in the following images.

Please, i need to recover some important files, what can i do with this? do you think if i do the short on the STEF4S the unit come alive?

Well, if 2 capacitors at the output of the electronic fuse appear to be short circuited to ground, IMHO there are 3 possible scenarios:

* One of those capacutors may have an electrical breakdown (you can safely remove those capacitors and doublecheck if there is still electric cintinuity between ground and the output of the electronic fuse).

* If there is still zero resistance between the output pins of the electronic fuse and the ground we need to desolder the electronic fuse in order to continue our investigation. It is well possible the the short circuit is just inside the electronic fuse itself.

* If there is still zero resistance between the output pads of the electronic switch (on the PCB) and ground it means the short circuit is somewhere else. In this case bypassing the electronic switch with a jumper will not help.

@nem13esm, the components in your first photo are inductors. A good inductor will measure shorted. Instead, you need to measure the resistance between the inductor and ground.

The capacitors in the second photo are probably bypassing the 5V supply. This suggests that the output of the e-fuse is shorted to ground.

I would follow the advice of Alexander Firsov.

Hi. I have a failed 860 evo 256gb because unstable voltage I think.
I checked the capacitor and found one shorted so far.
Can you or anyone tell me the value of this capacitor on the 860 evo ?. I will try give it a try

You're right. it's an inductor. Then the problem seems like I can't handle it.
Btw this ssd is still recognized in bios ,but it only shows the name and it takes like 10 minutes to boot up.
