IDE PCB swap to SATA HDD

November 10th, 2019, 1:48

Hi!,

I have a SATA WD HDD with the PCB damaged. Do you think that changing PCB and heads to the IDE HDD might work?

Absolutely No! If is a damaged PCB why change the heads?

They are both Tornado family drives though, so you can probably use the IDE PCB for the SATA drive if you transfer the ROM chip.

No idea why you'd even think about moving the heads.

2060-701444-003 PCB does not have external ROM

Judging by the fact that the SATA drive has already been opened, this looks like another botched DIY job to me.

In fact, I have three drives.

HDD 1:
SATA DAMAGED (Not turning on)
MDL: WD3200AAJS-00RYA0
DATE: 04-FEB-2007
DCM: EBNCNVJAA
MFG: Malaysia
PCB: 2061-701444-000 AA

HDD 2:
SATA WORKING 100%
MDL: WD3200AAKS-00VYA0
DATE: 11-OCT-2007
DCM: HARCNTJMAN
MFG: Thailand
PCB: 2061-701444-700 AC

HDD 3:
IDE WORKING 100%
MDL: WD3200AAJB
DATE: 21-APR-2007
DCM: HBNCHV2CB
MFG: Malaysia
PCB: 2060-701494-002

but both SATA´s does´t have ROM chip.

The two PCBs have different MCUs (88i6740 versus 88i6745), so wouldn't their ROM codes be incompatible?

Also, wouldn't each ROM have code specific for the corresponding interface (IDE versus SATA)?

Perhaps one could transfer the adaptives to the donor ROM, but then you would need to be concerned about compatibility with the SA modules, eg 11h.
