Trying to utilise a hotswap drive

I bought a HP Hard Drive 2TB 7.2K Midline Dual Port SAS 3.5 intending to try and use it in my PC by removing the caddy and connector PCB etc. I fitted the basic drive to a USB caddy that I use for testing 'conventional' drives. But when I try to access the drive from Windows 10 PC it will not allow me to format or partition it. It just says no media or something. I have tried diskpart but that fails too. Can log onto it but nothing I try will interconnect with the drive. Are these drives useable in PC's? Or have I bought a pig in a poke? Any help or suggestions welcome. Thanks.
