Hello,
I have an external hard drive that is not recognized and makes a ticking sound when plugged into the system. I asked someone about repairing it, and he said that to fix it, there must be a similar hard drive (same model, same serial) to remove the head of the healthy hard drive and put it on the damaged hard drive so that the data can be recovered.
Is it really like that? Do you need a similar healthy hard drive to repair a damaged hard drive?

Thank you.

It is amazing how you can be a member here for almost 10 years and not know this.

Yes, if the heads are dead or damaged, compatable working heads are needed. Sadly, matching heads is getting more complicated are rarely without other compounding issues to show up.
