Hi I am a newbie here.
I and my friend are seriously thinking about a new biz in Data Recovery Market. We both had some 8, 9 years work experience respectively - s/w engineer, system admin(windows server) and pc support for me,and unix engineer, emc storage enginner for my friend. We've been gathering as much information as we can and if we go ahead of this plan, we are also going to take some trainings from ppl who specialize in the field. It must be very hard to start a biz especially in this times of econcomic downturn.
I was just wondering what your take on the outlook of data recovery market? Since I haven't seen any gloomy reports on data recovery market yet, really itching to know what you, techies think about it.

Any little help would be much appreciated. :)

tos

DR is a whole new ball game. 8 years experience in computing may help, but your looking at another 8 years experience in DR before getting to similar levels of skill and knowledge as some of the guys in the industry. Training will be very difficult to find, and commercially available training courses are next to basic. The reason for this is DR is based purely on research and development in house, and many DR engineers have custom built tools, custom written software, custom techniques and methods and knowledge earned from many years hard work learning, and for these reasons many people are quite rightly unwilling to share this hard earned info and custom solutions.

It will not matter how much money you throw at the business, how much equipment you buy, and how many years experience you have in PC support and system admin, without the experience you will surely fail. This is similar to a optician performing a liver transplant - similar industries but completely different skillset and knowledge required.

As for the data recovery market, data is important to people, whether it is family photos or business documents, data will always be of importance, and while people still fail to backup this important information, there will always be a need for DR.

Hello hddguy,

Many thanks for your comment and kind advice. :)
I totally agree with you that it wouldn't be easy to catch up with the skillsets and knowhow abt DR, even with some basic trainings and help from DR guys, definitely it will take time as well. I might have to spend more time getting advice from as many ppl as I could and meeting ppl in DR field before making the decision.

Thanks again,

Chris
