USB EHD won't list any more

October 13th, 2009, 3:49

What happened resulted in my having had the EHD online with some files open, when rather foolishly initiated the "turn off system restore on all drives", then panic set in and I clicked "cancel".

Thereafter I was unable to access the drive while it is in it's case. Attempts at opening the drive's root directories, always resulted in prompting that 'a file or directory is corrupted', yet it lists fine when using an IDE cable.

I'm fairly confident that nothing's wrong with the EHD's case (containing the fan controls, jacks and what not's) as I already 'poking around' inside it and confirmed it seems to be getting primary power, the fan runs, jacks seem fine, and yes I tried different cables, etc., but maybe the 'corruption' involves some hardwired chip programming in the EHD's case?

I suppose to rule the case entirely out as the potential problem, I'm thinking it might be wise to (since I have a twin EHD with a known working case), I could simply plop the problem drive into my working case and see if it will list the directory, but could I be chancing that I could create the same issue with the known working case and then also be deprived the usefulness of yet one more of my EHD's case's?

I'm assuming Artyom Rubtsov's HDDScan (v3.1) should correct whatever's wrong, but I don't know how to go about using it.

Forgive me for not yet even unpacking that utility and reading up on this stuff, but I could well be incapable of 'getting it' and doing what's needed w/o messing up the drive (as it's got content I don't have room to back it up elsewhere). I did search this forum for EHD drive recognition and surprisingly not a single hit.

Advanced appreciation for any afforded 'hand holding'.

Happ-e-trails to all,
