How did you get into DR?

Just something i sat wondering about, so thought i would ask and find out :-)

Take my hat off to the DR Guys, thats for sure.

I've been into PC's for years and years, but never even thought about DR in anyway, although i've had my share of problems with drives for myself and customers who i have built systems for in the past.

Nowdays though, i'm more into Web / GFX Design, so kind of stay away from Hardware unless i need something for myself!

Would love to hear your stories; What got you interested, how you learned and where you are today.

I was born into it. My father was a Maxtor, mother was a samsung. I was dropped on my head when i was just 2.5" and needed to sort my spindle out. the rest is history :lol:

Thats just the way things are

One day I fell and hit my head. From that day forward I knew that Data Recovery was my calling. :yayaya:

Some people in a big white van kidnapped me one day while I was walking out of Fry's Electronics and forced me to work as a slave in the data recovery industry. They force me to work with low standard crappy products from China (SalvationData). I am rewarded with food and water when the SalvationData products recover a drive.

I'm not used to secrets and hush hush kind of thing... Been in IT many years, and the internet is always a good source of information from the people in the know... Not here though.

It's obvious there's allot of business people on here, and not pure IT enthusiasts, as I, like many others, believe information should be free and readily available. I'm in no way saying that I'm going to start up a business and try and make money from something like this, but being the person I am, I like to learn things and try and get some help along the way.

After all, no-one can take years of experience from you all and put it into practice tomorrow. Let's not forget the Tens of thousands of pounds worth of equipment most of you use too.

I say: If someone wants to wreck their hard drive and loose data while thinking they can do it, then LET THEM.

I'm not having a dig or anything, but certain people like myself like info to learn, and thrive on it daily. This Forum initially seemed like a good source of info, but damn, it's like getting blood from a stone.

Anyway, I'll be sticking around, piking bits up here and there.

Have you used the search function? This forum contains more information about hard drive repair/data recovery than any other (English) forum on the planet.

I'm beginning to learn about the vast amount of knowledge that is available trough the search function - that isn't my problem! I was referring to when members (like myself) have posed a question, and the reply is usually the business-minded one liner "there's nothing you can do, send it to a pro."

Whereas, if someone had said "sounds like a head problem, you'd need to have the pcb checked, hooked up to x-hardware, sounds like the common fault X, firmware needs updating, etc" then that would be great, and gives me confidence that people actually know what they're talking about and provides me with info so I can read further into it.

I've never asked for tool designs, peoples own methods or fixes, just info to understand problems.

Anyway, thanks for your replies, nothing like a bit of forum banter :-)

I have just checked the thread and 3 different members pointed out it was a head problem. I'm not sure what else could have been said.

I wasn't directly referring to my own problem. That, I wouldn't dream of touching myself, as there's too much data to risk loosing :-)

However, if it was, then what needs to be done? Head swap? Could it be repaired without swapping, or fixed by the use of such as the Pc3000 system (or similar). I don't mean this in hope for a direct yes or no, just to get options and other opinions. I mean, for all I know, a DR could plug something in, and hey presto, job done!

Would just be nice to know more info, that's all.

The only way data recovery is possible is if you get the disk to a workable state. This could be though means of replacing faulty parts, modifying SA, repairing electronics etc. Depends on the fault.

The amount of info on this forum will probably decline as most people in the business now understand that they have shot their own foot off while helping others. So enjoy whats here at the moment and don't expect much from the pro's anymore.

Guru: Suppose in a way, you're right, but isnt this true of all business types and the internet?

I'll admit, there's nothing more i'd love than to spend a week watching some pro DR doing thier job, as i get excited when i see the impossible become possible

For now though, i'll read what i can find and be happy! (Like i have for the past 3 nights, 6 hours a night)

Back On Topic now... No-one yet has told me how they got into DR in the first place :mrgreen:

many years of HDD repair and then it happend.....

I love HDD it's a little crazy but at the moment it's my life

I did repair on microelectronics. One day a client asked me if i could take a look at his defective harddisk.
His machine was at a standstill and it was very urgent.
It was an old conner if i remember well.
I took the challenge and was able to recover it. Then i realised there was a market for this kind of jobs and so i got into this business. Thats more than 10 years ago now.
