hey
i have a transcend SD card SDHC 4G to use in my digital camera
it was formatted fat 32 out of the box
now i had some pics that must be deleted
i wiped the drive using Active@ eraser
and then by using East-Tec eraser 2009 using DoD 532 method
and then formatted the drive in a command prompt using : format /U command
and after all that formatted using east-tec eraser again using peter gutman method 35 passes
now i gave the sd card to the tech guy at the company
and the worst choc ever
he used an application that he dont want to say the name
then used Recover4all pro 2.21
and suprise, alll the pictures were back every single one of them and by the full name as well
how is that possible ?
and what application did he use ??

better ask him!

Either you accidentally gave him the backup copy that you didn't erase, or the erasing programs you used didn't actually do anything with the flash card.
A simple overwrite with zeros would prevent any software on the planet from retrieving anything from your flash card.

@guru : he refuse to tell which drives me crazy
@drc : no i am sure i didnt give him any backup copy or anything and i am sure that the apps i used erased everything since i tried to get the data back and no app succeeded
BUT
he CLAIMS that he can access the SD card master partition or the TOC or something like that in which he can regain access to overwritten data
and the funny part he got the pics with all its attributes with full file names
i dont know how on earth that is possible
seriously i need help
January 27th, 2010, 2:27
why you need help now ??????????
I think that you recovered your data already!!
January 27th, 2010, 3:57
What is this tech guys name?
David Blaine?
January 27th, 2010, 4:55
@ Yacobs - you sure you are not fishing for applications that can recover overwritten data?
If you have a 4GB card, with 4GB of zeros written to it, and your guy can recover 4GB of overwritten data, then you must have the only 4GB card in the world capable of storing 8GB of information!!
If you have more than one and are interested i selling..... lol

Accessing the TOC or whatever he calls it will not recover the photos.
once wiped, memory cards do not leave any trace of data as they are not magnetic. They consist of transistors which are in an on or an off state giving binary 1 or 0 there are no intermediate phases, so reading would be impossible. So as drc says a simple overwrite would render the card unrecoverable.
if the memory card had the 'master partition' or 'TOC' it would then need to contain exactly double the existing memory in order to rebuild it.
I think that either your support guy is winding you up and has a copy of your data, or as PCImage suggests he is a magician or sage of some description.
I have a couple of memory cards here that have been overwritten with zeros, would your friend like to offer me a quote for recovery.

I bet you used "Trial" versions ....................
numpy

@unknown20010 i need help cuz i dont want the data to be recovered
plus i need to know how the heck did that happen
@hddguy : no what i saw from his computer is he used an app (which am dying to know) then used recover 4all pro then kaboom the data is there

with the full name as well

insane i know
@guru: no i didn't use trial version i just bought the 2 programs a week ago cuz we need to wipe a lot of data at work they are full
ok a conclusion of what is written her that is either IMPOSSIBLE , a magic tric, or someway he has a copy of the data
cuz my head is going to explode from this :S seriously
what i know is there is no single way on this planet by any computer geek or not that he can possibly get the data back from a 35 pass wiped SD card using peter gutmann method it doesnt make any sense at all, not even CIA.NSA.mi5.mossad, kgb they cant do it :S

Im pretty sure a blowtorch may help you here
January 27th, 2010, 6:30
@hddguy : lol i know, but that wont answer how he did it
unless he is a messenger of Lucifer that can do magnetic trics lol
its always HOW , its not just blow the data

and if we all knew that would be a great knowledge (if that is possible theoretically)

Probably user error.
BTW you need the service's in correct order
MI5, FSB(AKA KGB) and then rest........
January 27th, 2010, 10:19
@guru define user error !
January 27th, 2010, 10:35
and nooo
you want the correct order then
Mossad, Kgb, mi5, nsa

Correct. And it doesn't need 35-passes of overwriting, just one.

New way of wiping memory cards..
Equipment: 1 Van Der Graaf generator. 1 Metal table connected to earth.
Stand on an insulated floor mat and power up the VDG and put your left hand on the shiny ball at the top.
Slowly move your other hand toward the contacts on the memory chip on a metal - earthed table.
When you get close enough a massive static shock will zap the memory card.
After you get out of hospital, take the memory card to Yacob's Mossad mate and see if he can recover the data.

I thought this was Duncan's platter extractor when I first saw it, but it should be ok for wiping memory cards to DoD spec.

It can't be the platter extractor, it's way too small lol
