why would you want to spend this type of money

was thinking of buying it and then putting the platters on the spindle then use my own headstacks to
read my data

This kind of stuff doesn't work on new technology; drive density and calibration is too high for this type of device to work anymore.

$5000 really isn't too bad....if it actually worked.
If a machine existed that I could put platters on (no matter the brand) and read the data off, and then basically rebuild the platter order, etc like a RAID (haha) then $5000 would be no problem.
but you can't, so this is the largest paperweight/doorstop that I have seen.
Would look impressive for marketing!
