P133 and file transfer speedo

Hi,
i have a server with 2x Pentium 133 cpu (but with just one cpu, cannt get to work both cpu
)
have 32mb ram and ;
Its running debian linux, running primary postgress and samba file server.
Everythnig works fine, only the ata transfer speed is too slow.
on internal scsi controler its can copy file around 2mb/s
on my primary Dac 960p scsi its going around 2.5mb/s
but i have 3 ata hdd and speed is around 800kb/s.
This is from copying data localy on server, over samba its slower
My question is, its this a normal speed for p133 cpu ? or did i have a problem somewhere ?
I have this server for two years now and i have most of the importand data on scsi drivers in raid 1 and thats ok.
But now more and more users sharing data + capacity of scsi drives is not enough and i have to more often use a ata drives.
is this a normal file copy speed ? for a p133 based server ?

No its not normal. it should be faster- a bit...
Bottleneck might be on ram - but i think mostly the processors are to weak to cope with database and samba. It not difficult to move this setup to new hard ware.
If you wondering if your ata hdds are slow- test them on a modern computer .

another suggestion here:
Try to ghost your server, and restore it back on a modern PC as ppumkin said on a VM environment
i always use the VM for testing, when it works well, i move it to live server
plus, the relation between Processor & Memory are important, i guess its the CPU and MEM
give it a shot

thank you for response;
i added some ram in, but without effect. When i tweaked a memory timing in bios, that was like 10% copy speed boost.
Is this mean that my problem is too slow ram ? i cannt imagine ram that cannt handle 1mb transfer
i was wathing a cpu too, when i copy file its going around 60% of cpu usage not more....
I was thinking about server upgrade, but im still not sure if its worth it.
Whats a power consuption compare ? between old pc and new one ? which one will be cheaper on electric bill ?

upgrading to a Amd Sempron (green power) or Pentium D will be more than enough for you! BEcause you are upgrading from 133mhz to 1600mhz..
Even if you maange to find an old Pentium4 Hyper Threading.. but it uses allot of power - The new technology is power saving! You can get the WD Green Hard Drive and set the computer for power saving. It will only boost when it needs to use more energy.
Exactly how much consumption i am not sure.

Oh yea. try and do what Einstein9 says - the second time 
clone your original system to a VMware image and run it on a newer pc - test how well the performance increases. If it does at all..
I would also suggest maybe to try and make a completely new install and try to migrate the data. that is more time consuming and might need allot of attention to other details. You made it obvious you are running a tight budget. Give the VMware a try. you can get demo version to test it out.

I decided to get or build a new server and install all from scratch. rebuild my raid arrays ....
My first idea was to get a P4, but when i saw this list of cpu from wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_CPU_power_dissipation#Pentium_III
Its looks like that the best is Pentium 3 500mhz copermine with just 16w.
P4 have around 60+w. Not sure how some power saving works on p4, but from the list its look like p3 is best choice ?
I was looking around a little bit today and i can get dell poweredge 6300 ,its realy huge server 50kg with 4x P3 500mhz xeon for just 50$ with 6 drivers in.
But im not sure whats better choise consitering power cons. to get a server like this remove cpus leave just one or build one from desktop components.
When i look on a server its have 3 redundant power supply, lot of fans inside etc.... not sure if this is a power saving solution.....
Now the hard drive problem;

I like scsi, i have them in raid 1 arrays ( for best security), but i need just one hardrive to be ready and speeding, others can be sleeping and waiting if something happen.

I would not recommend using P3 - it is missing allot of architecture upgrades. It might only help you in short term.
P4 is one of the first chips that used "dual core" hyper threading.. but the power consumption of these chips were sky high and not good for servers. Thats why i reccomned pentium D (very low power consumption) or AMD Sempron. It has the latest architecture for single core processors with benefit of Voltage Throtteling using AMD SmartMonitor or Intels SpeedStep technology. If server is idle it can fall as low as 3Watts the CPU!
Remember to backup! before doing anything with your live system. First build your new system and make sure it works ok. Then copy your data over and test the new one.
Buy some new hdds, they support sleep mode.
