thx
I decided to get or build a new server and install all from scratch. rebuild my raid arrays ....
My first idea was to get a P4, but when i saw this list of cpu from wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_CPU_power_dissipation#Pentium_IIIIts looks like that the best is Pentium 3 500mhz copermine with just 16w.
P4 have around 60+w. Not sure how some power saving works on p4, but from the list its look like p3 is best choice ?
I was looking around a little bit today and i can get dell poweredge 6300 ,its realy huge server 50kg with 4x P3 500mhz xeon for just 50$ with 6 drivers in.
But im not sure whats better choise consitering power cons. to get a server like this remove cpus leave just one or build one from desktop components.
When i look on a server its have 3 redundant power supply, lot of fans inside etc.... not sure if this is a power saving solution.....
Now the hard drive problem;
I have now mostly scsi drivers, its good i like it. But problem is they dont have any stand by mode or power saving mode. They just going full speed all the time, i was trying to set a power saving on some of them years ago, but nothing works.
Is this a normal on scsi drives ? Or is just that my scsi controller dont have this option ?
I like scsi, i have them in raid 1 arrays ( for best security), but i need just one hardrive to be ready and speeding, others can be sleeping and waiting if something happen.
Do i need to put a sata or ata drive to get sleeping mode ?
thx
