The following was recently posted to WD's forum:

It is claimed that the HDD was replaced with a flash drive, and nuts and bolts were used to make up the weight.

That kind of fake drives first appeared in Russia a year ago, maybe even earlier.

I have first got to see these "fake" flash drives and hard drives come from China about 6 years ago, when my friend bought a 64GB flash drive on a street in Shanghai for $15. After filling the flash drive with about 500MB of files, it suddenly started acting like crazy, and files couldn't be retrieved from it. In the end, I found out that the flash drive was about 512MB, and they faked out the size of it. Same thing I saw people used to do with processors, faking out frequency. I have actually seen one of the fake flash drives come in for recovery. I do not believe recovery was successful.

Hilarious stuff.

I guess that sometimes you just get what you pay for.

Well, at least they took the time to wire up an LED light...

I had a friend that went with his girlfriend overseas around early 2000 I would guess. I cant remember now the location but I know they brought back many CDs with windows programs and playstation 1 games. She bought a camera there as a present for her mum. It was boxed and shrink wrapped. The box had rocks wrapped in newspaper in it, not even a fake camera.

On a side note, I still have one of the app CDs as a "momento"... I did a malware scan on it last year for fun and there are 9 infections! IIRC the CD is labelled "Official Software Windows" or something as dodgy.

It is amazing the stuff that happens out there :)
