SAS card

Im a little stuck and thought id pick on the knowledgeable peeps on here....

Its a server running server 2003 with 2 drives mirrored via a SAS card. The card has blown. I can insrall a new card easy enough but how you mirror the drive is something i have not been involved with before.

Is it a case of installing the card and rebuolding the mirror so to speak? Or install one drive and blank off the other then install it to build it? Im pretty lost so amy advice appreciated.

Its a SAS card using normal sata drives. I may also need to repartition the drive as the boot server side is full and was going to pinch a gb from the data side. After performing a full backup that is. I have been asked to look at this but nobody knows any passwords for the admin accounts as the last guy left under a cloud so to speak. Also the data on both drives do not match. There is more on one than the other so im guessing that has the more updated data on and the card has not been performing correctly for a while....

While we know the card is damaged at this point, it is likely that the drive that has less and older data dropped out at some point.

Check the SMART values on the drive and go from there.

Also, keep in mind that drives in general a limited life time. So, if you were to continue using at least one of the drives, do not be shocked if unfortunate surprises occur.

My opinion is to start from scratch with fresh drives if feasible.

The server wont even boot as it says it cannot find and bootable media and theres no option to config the card. Weirdly enough if you install the drive into another machine it works fine.
At the moment its all about getting it up running so the business can continue. Then i would look at upgrading the drives. Im not very familiar with servers in generalso wouldnt fancy setting one up from scratch thoigh it is only used as a basic fileserver.
Since it is only 5 clients for the server they may be considering just using a nas box but heard they are difficult when it comes to adding storage....

i May not Expert but cant understand your statement

2) Also the data on both drives do not match

if it is Raid1 both Drives Data has to be same Raid 1 is Mirror.

Solution:-

if you want to upgrade Hard Drive
A) Clone Os HDD to New HDD
B) Connect HDD to New Controller & Repair OS
C) for Server Password you can use Hiren's Bootable CD to Remove Password.

Don't Experiment on Original HDD
