Hard drives fall to a freeze state when someone leaves it in the freezer too long. This can also lead to freezer burn. And with freezer burn comes data loss.

Most likely the drive has gotten to the point where it has several issues:
1. Bad sectors
2. High chance of firmware issue
3. Possible failing/failed read-write components

Need a solid diagnostic by a professional to narrow down to the exact issues.

I am afraid that DIY is not possible as like you said the drive freezes.

Also, this is contingent on the fact that you are not actually referring to the drive being physically dropped in a manner that sustained a major shock. In that case, there is definitely a spindle mechanical issue possibility.

A cable will not help in any way.

There are other problems that a cable can't address. It's internal problem.
