Low cost 2 TB (8x 250 GB) file server

May 28th, 2007, 19:21

Hi,
From time to time I'm able to buy defect WD and Maxtor (7Y250P0) drives and repaired them with 3-4 different tools. Also many thanks to HDDScan !!!!!

Now I decided to make a 'good big' server for my own. I was too lazy to solder my self-made "multi" Y-12V hdd connector-cable and so I put tape on open cable ends (in 3 variations).

Then I put all together what I had (includes recently buyed used promise Ultra100 TX2 ATA controller and Silicon Image SIL0680 controller) and an very loud 120mm cooler with cooling-grid (will be replaced by an silent cooler in further times!) + more minor coolers.

Inside: AMD Sempron 2600+ (coolest and lessest power consumption CPU I had), 2x 512 MB DDR400 memory, (new?) Jetway Socket 754 K8 mainboard.

complete specification (in German):

AMD Sempron 2600+ Sockel 754 + original AMD Kühler
2x 512 MB Swissbit DDR400 (PC3200) Speicher
80 GB Systemfestplatte Maxtor 6Y080L0
8x 250 GB Maxtor 7Y250P0
1x Memorex CD-402E CD-ROM
1x Silicon Image SIL0680 RAID-Controller
1x Promise Ultra100 TX2 ATA-Controller
1x 3,5 Zoll Diskettenlaufwerk
Altes geschenktes ATX-Gehäuse (entstaubt, Hardware rausgeworfen ;-)
350 Watt Fortron Source FSP350-60MDN(R) Netzteil
Selbstgebastelte Stromanschlüsse
Metallschienen aus dem
Alte Server-Lüfter (laut)
Alter Just Cooler Frontpanel-Lüfter

Many pictures an one little (xvid-Codec) video, here is an 7zip archive and a html-file, little comments (in German, sorry): http://home.arcor.de/hardware-teile/temp/2tbp.7z

I like any comments
:D
