27 GB corrupted PST File...

April 3rd, 2012, 12:21

hi everybody,
I've been working on this for a while now and I can't find any solution now.

After recovering partial data from a hard drive, I did get a corrupted 27 GB PST file.

The only result I had was with Stellar software.
Scanning went great. No problem appeared.

Problem is when I try to save it in as a new PST file. It gives me an error message at around 2 GB.
So basically, I saved folder by folder to be sure not to overpass the 2 GB limit but the problem comes again when I try to save the emails that are into the Inbox folder, which should size approx. 24 GB.

I tried to contact Stellar but they aren't very efficient and keep asking me to send them a screen capture of the error (which I can't as the message disappear as soon as I touch the keyboard).

I tried to split original file with their other PST splitter software but as the file is corrupted, it makes it impossible...

Any idea ? Or any other software to advise ?

Thanks

What filesystem are you saving to? Fat or ntfs?

like dobrevjetser says, if it's FAT32 that could be the problem due to 2GB file limits. Also you might have an old version of stellar, make sure you use the newest version and also a recent version of outlook 2007 or greater. Are you sure that the original PST is actually 27GB?

Actually it's NTFS and it's last software version. Ihave Outlook 2007 (even if I don't understand why t would have an impact on the saving process of Stellar) and yes it is 27 GB
But I've been quite a dumb-ass. I tried it again with no better result. But after 15 hours of scanning and 24 hours of saving I've been to read the error message... that actually wasn't an error message. Only a message telling that the saving process was over and that file was 2 GB :?

I don't understand how I can start from a file of 27 GB to a 2 GB file ???

Sometimes header damage will take you very long (27GB) to read and re-construct

as far as i remember , there was a freeware tool which VIEWS damaged PST files header and you will be able to extract those images
out of the damaged file, and from your outlook later can be imported.

the problem is: i do not remember the name of this damn freeware, but you may google it.

good luck

Well the reason I asked is that most of these recovery softwares for pst will use outlook api for mapi calls, in other words you must have a copy of outlook installed. Some older copies of outlook will not support files larger than 2GB, but newer versions do.

What happens when you run the scanpst.exe utility provided with Office?

Sorry guys, I haven't seen your replies before...

I think (at least I badly hope) I finally resolved the case with a different software that I found by chance thanks to Einstein; looking over google for a PST viewer. After a few tries, I found a free pst viewer from Systools (so totally different from you expected me to find I guess) but I gave a shot and... scanning result was definitely much better than with Stellar: much more folders and emails... So I decided to invest a few bucks in the Outlook recovery toolbox they have and at the moment saving process is on the road.... We'll see what happens ini a few hours.

Concerning Stellar, I must say that I'm very disappointed with their technical support... I've never seen something that bad ! But from old post I've read on the forum, I guess I don't teach you guys anything new about that !

ok got you, but I don't think that Stellar software works this way. Thanks for the explanation !

Message error : "An error has occurred which caused the scan to be stopped."
But the file is badly damaged.

I tried Kernel Outlook PST Viewer (in my search for this PST viewer Einstein mentioned) but the file was considered severely damaged and the soft wouldn't go further on the recovery process.

I'll let you know how it finally went with Systool toolbox as soon as I got a result.

Actually I am pretty sure it does work that way, hence one of its requirements is to have outlook installed so that it can call from it's api.

But regardless, I hope you can get it all resolved, Good luck!
