USB HDD with SD Card reader

January 7th, 2013, 13:06

Hi guys

I'm searching for an external HDD where I copy the contents of a SD card without the use of a PC.

Do you know such a drive?

Thanks

Hi,

Yes, a few devices are available to do this. They are often used by photographers, who want to "dump" their photos from SD card to a portable HDD. Then they re-format the SD card in their camera, take more photos and repeat the process. Of course it's a bit risky for them, as they are relying on the HDD completely (until they get to home or somewhere to make a backup of the hard disk).

Also, the reliability of these portable storage units is not always very good - there are some stories of failures to write the contents of the SD card(s) correctly onto the HDD. In these cases, data recovery is not helpful, if the photo files were never actually written to the HDD!

Here are a few links for you to read, but I'm not able to tell you which of these is available in Portugal, or whether they match other requirements you may have (e.g. cost, weight, battery life, capacity, reliability etc. etc.):

Since SD cards have become cheaper, I believe this type of portable HDD is becoming less popular, and more photographers just buy and carry lots of SD cards (or a few bigger capacity ones) instead of these portable HDD units.

Hope this info helps :)
