While not in and of itself an interesting story or anything like that.. It is a perfect example of the blind leading the blind. And it illustrates the bad advice you can get on the internet. Here in this case, the customer dropped a lappy and banged up the disk. Took it to a store that seemed to recommend pro-level data recovery for around $1,000. The customer can't afford that and is now making the situation much worse by doing CHKDSK scans and using Recuva. Recuva is little more than glorified undelete software IMHO.

The customer is also being told to try other means of scanning with Linux tools. All of this (I would assume) is causing more head and platter damage. And then to top it off the freezer trick is recommended!

I used to lurk around and advise people that would visit that forum to save up for full-blown pro-level services and got blasted by the moderators. So I toned it down and just recommended pro-level services in general, not any one specific company. And I got thrown out!

Meanwhile unsuspecting (un-educated in the ways of backups and DR) and gullible users continue to visit forums like that (and others) believing advice just because it is presented nicely and "sounds" like it might be good.

Doesn't that kinda piss you off just a teeny-eensy bit?

What is even funnier, is that this drive *could* have a chance, even with DIY techniques.
Now, freezers, ovens, blenders and hammers will ruin it for good.
