Indeed most of us are hobyists. We play around with stuff that corporate moguls wished we'd leave alone. Their fears being we would discover things arnt as impossible as they would lead us to believe. This leads to new tools and tips that might provide new solutions not otherwise available. Some people are generous and helpfull and a real asset to the "hacker" comunity. But other people like BlackST get a little too big for their britches. They may be smart and full of ideas, but unfortunately, it all went to their head and they become irritating and abusive with others simply seeking the knowledge. The world is full of people, so we have to try to ignore their pokes and jabs and focus on the hobby and those helpfull contributers. So BlackST, go away untill you somehow figure out how to play nice with others. Your comments do nothing to help better the hddguru community.

Now back to hard drives. Yea there are some problems that crop up that just seem to get worse over time. But I am just looking to fix the little scratches that may be remapped rendering a drive relyable again. The annoying part is that the tinyist scratches wipe out many thousands of blocks that take 3-4 seconds each to examine. Its a total waste of time we have to put up with since the hacker community hasn't yet made a work around for. This latest utility I am trying, MHDD, isnt perfect, but it can at least let me probe around the drive to discover the extent of the bad blocks of each drive. I discovered the drive scanning for over a month has a repetetive failure thruout the drive. I conclude its a head problem, so there is no point in continuing. Another has a 700,000 block scratch in the middle, and after weeks of scanning, it is almost done. :) I have stopped and rescaned several times and it appears the fixed area is staying fixed. Hopefully one day somebody will make a scanner that fixes scratches in mere hours, so they are not quite so annoying.

Oh here is a good question, how do you know when the G-list is getting full? Right now I have no idea the size of the biggest scratch that can be remapped. I just scan and hope a month later it doesnt say "remapping is full".

Oh, also why do you say long scans is guaranteed to kill it? Unless its one of those growing problems. These drives are make to run for years.

Why don't you seek the knowledge at local stores ? Also, the world is full of forums, why not seeking somewhere else instead of getting no aswer and no solutions ? BTW Before speaking about hddguru community (you are part of it ?) take a look at yourself, re-read what you have posted and take your own conclusions...

I went and counted them and I own 116 5-1/4inch drives, and 19 laptop drives. Thats roughly 24Tbytes of storage. I am kinda addicted to emule. One laptop drive is click of death, and 8 of the 5 1/4s are in various states of distress. Awhile back I bought a 400gigy seagate and out of box it was clearly a 160giger even down to the pcb, with a 400 gig label stuck on it. I imediately took it back to best buy and they were amazed but swapped it out for a real 400. Once when I had 21 drives lined up like dominoes serving up files, I slipped on a clear plastic wrapper on carpet and landed on the drives. I was hurting, and the squalling and squealing was absolutely unreal. 8 drives were destroyed and 5 more recovered with lots of BBs. I eventually RMAed all the damaged ones useing the names of all my neighbors so WD wouldnt have a cow. Another time I blew all 5 drives in a cage when I accidently connected the power plug backwards. It was right at bootup and I just remembered to plug them in after I hit the power button and tried to beat the bios. Yes the plug is polarized, but the pins did touch. These were all seagates, and my neighbors again helped me out. So yes, I have had my share of HD bad luck, so I am very big on backups. I have 4 3ware raid cards but non of the storage is raided. Just make them JBOD so one pci slot is used. I use every letter of the alphabet and my room is trully a computer room. I used to have 7 21" trinitrons in there when I daytraded stocks, but I finally hauled them out to make room with flat panels and a Belkin 8KVM. Things are much nicer now and not nearly as warm. In total, I have built things up to 2 8u PCs, 5 towers, and 5 laptops all ready for action. My Lambo kitcar is going slowely but Ill get back to it in the fall when I lighten up on the Emule.

You seem to have a lot of money and time to spend, at this point why don't you buy a complete PC3000 set bundled with a training course? You'll then be able to fix everything, no need to ask and also you can maybe start a new DR business.

Isnt it great that i have nice neighbors that share and care? Again, another useless post by the BlackST. Interestingly fitting name. But I know not everybody is like you and I did find scanners here that I am checking out. As for the 1TB drive, it would be great if there was a relatively simple solution, but I am aware that fewer tricks will work as the drives get larger, so I look more out of my insatiable curiosity than out of desperate desire. I already did a live PCB swap on it and posted it in detail for all newbies to read so they know its a snap with steady hands. But I decline to open it even though I am really curious. It will take up more time I do other things with, and it will ruin a perfectly good waranty. Again, some things are better left broke so we get new stuff. 8)

Yeah, I don't like that BlackST, with his knowledge, and his experience. Who does he think he is? Is he special just because he knows a lot?

Actually, Yes.

Only a fool worships their own ignorance. I'm not sure how to best describe someone who attacks someone who is trying to share the very knowledge they are seeking. Perhaps the dog that bites the hand that feeds it?

It always annoys me when someone gets bent out of shape because they think someone is better than them. If they only put that effort into making themselves better...

To beat you to the punch... There is a very significant difference between you making yourself better, and me trying to teach you everything, for free, while you don't even listen. Also, knowledge and experience is not magically generated when you pretend you have knowledge and experience.

I dont know where you got that post, its not anything I said. And I dont worship ignorance either as I am always hunting forums for more info. But I dont condemn ignorance either. From somebody elses perspective, we are all ignorant in one way or another.

My only beef has consistantly been harasment and abuse of people not recognised here as experts. There is no defence or excuse from anybody that can ever justify it. If its a dumb moron being abusive, its best just to walk away. If its an otherwise intelligent person being abusive, then its possible that they can understand communication and alter their behavior upon seeing the light. After all, we all make mistakes.

You are free to share what you want and if people dont want to abosbe it, its not your problem. But you have to know that some people are as thick as bricks, but there is no point to beating them up for it. If you dont want to get into detail, then simply say so or let somebody else jump in if they wish.

Oh, and I never have to pretent. Everything about me is the real deal. Im not Trump, but its not a bad life and Im really happy with it. And now that we have the internet, the free sharing of ideas and tips is making us all better and better.

Re: Inteligently deleting slow and bad blocks.

Good luck to you then. I'll just leave you with this. Not everything is free, even information. Nobody here OWES you anything. This isn't Western Digital's free help desk. What you get here is a gift. Considering the secrecy of most DR firms, I'd say people here are VERY open. If Grandma gets you a bike, and you whine that you wanted a car instead, don't expect anything from her next Christmas...

One more thing before I go... Information is a commodity. I go to my Doctor for a checkup, and I pay him for his opinion. His knowledge is valuable to me. Despite your distorted view, based on the 'Emule Economy', this is true. Now, you can gather this knowledge yourself, over years of experimenting, or you can pay someone. Even so, money can't make someone an expert. When you expect someone to fill your cup for free, it doesn't encourage me to help you. It's obvious you either are, or have the mentality of a 16 year old. Why are you wasting a professional's time on silly questions, with the ultimate goal of recovering some bootleg games and porn? Why bother a pro, asking for his valuable time, so you can line up your many drives and play dominoes? Why tell us about all your fraud by stupidly destroying quantities of drives, then scamming the manufacturer into giving you new ones? So, you're rich (well, Daddy is at least), yet you expect a free ride from everyone?

Again, good luck to you.

No wonder people want to close the forums.............Quit beating people up than asking for help

Re: Inteligently deleting slow and bad blocks.

I ask because its an open forum that says hddguru - everything harddrive. I dont expect that to mean a place for guru's only. But I read BlackST is working on that. I ask because I dont expect people to judge the worth of the drive for me, or the data on it. I ask because I like to tinker with technology and add to my knowledge from people that may be as friendly as I with similar interests. And I ask because the rules of the board dont say people here charge a fee. It is not a streach to think people here freely share information, as with any forum. But if somebody has information they dont want to share, they dont have to. Simple as that. I dont, but I have seen others get upset about it. But lets face it. If you shake a lolly pop in front of a baby, then stick it back in your mouth, dont complain when the baby starts to squall.

So to sum up, Im a friendly dude and I dont expect anything from anybody. But being the internet, I can expect that if I dont find what I look for here, I am sure to find it somewhere else. All because everybody blabs about something and it all finds itself online. The age of secrets has pretty much ended. We are now firmly in the age of sharing and there is pretty much no stopping it. If you want to charge for your secrets, I feel for you because as soon as you sell some of those secrets, those people now hand them out for free. Its unstopable as its the will of the masses. The insatiable thirst for knowledge as cheap as a monthly internet access.

If you dont believe me, email the music industry. They are changing big time because the CD industry is dying. They are finally getting thru their heads that nobody wants CDs. They want MP3's and they want them cheap. Not price fixed as they have been for decades. I am not saying its right or wrong, I am saying its the will of the people and it cant be stopped. I didnt start all that, but I might as well do it too. Its good for me just as its good for you. You talk Emule down like its a negative thing. But its a fact of life that cant be stopped, so you might as well embrace it and make your life better with it. Because its only getting bigger and bigger. You can either ride the beast, or let it swallow you up.

I don't want to close this forum because simply it's not mine. And another CLOSED forum is on the way. Before puttin' in my mouth something that I didn't say, be careful.
Anyway, you think you and your emule culture will rule one day ? Dear, you have to eat and buy goods, you are not fed with a ethernet cable connected to your modem... maybe the cable ends somewhere else... who know... they are intended for data not for food.
Here comes the best part - I don't like show off details of my personal life, but it's time to clean up the air: beside DR that is a very secondary area of interest, I am a service engineer and I repair and service in volume retail systems, barcode scanning , EAS (electronic article surveillance) , terminals, data communication systems, industrial and high end UPS/HF inverters, welding systems, broadcast systems, electronic boards for air conditioners and so on. Almost everything except consumer electronics and low-cost gizmos. A passion for electronics, indeed.
In my area, I service near 100% the installed systems , because the dealers rely on my service and have EXCLUSIVELY me (guess why) as alternative to the factory. A FAST, competitive and same quality alternative, as I am authorized SC for many things and also I know personally the engineers of many equipments . Just for my knowledge and skill. PROVEN skill, because I have to deliver solutions and answers, not excuses. You won't buy a CD and you'll emule it but you have to eat and get dressed and move and have leisure and education for you and for your family; if you come here , even when you buy a chewinggum packet, with 90% of probability the cash register in the shop has a board serviced by ME or the scanning system was repaired by ME or you are passing thru a EAS system maybe installed , most often serviced by ME, so imagine when I see in supermarkets people buying.... they are indirectly giving me money. Silently and respectfully, I thank them for making me a living. And remember, there's a lot of people like me, silent, that maybe in you area service almost everything you CANNOT and YOU'LL NEVER CAN service, that - just like me - don't have nothing to do than wait the next call for service or the expiration of the maintenance contract to get the money. I can stop working right now, my work is auto-sustainable and auto-sustained by the strenght of honesty and the power of knowledge. Maybe I ruined your day,I'm sure your funny, confused right-winged/communist ideas (make up your mind : stock trading = capitalism or everything for free for all = communism) remain the same...
And beware... internet fees are getting low, but the price of corn and cereals is rising dramatically, so maybe one bad day (not so far) you'll have an Iphone featured cell for 10$ but you'll have to pay 1,000,000 $ for a lunch. Or will you pay with 1 PB of internet connectivity? And don't be surprised if one day the ECM of your car will give you a kick in the ass (maybe a simple syscon , cost : about 1$ but NOT AVAILABLE because IT'S CUSTOM so you have no choice) leaving you on your own feet maybe 100 miles away from the nearest service station : and then if u have a real MULE you can go further riding, slowly... but an E-MULE will be simply useless. Even when you'll say fuck up! I'll buy a used one, the manufacturer has already took away you money... and you can't do everything on your own...
The same for your TV : if a custom component fails, you'll be able to get the service manual for free, but in the exact moment you buy the spare part, used or not, the engineers and the brand owners are giving you a full force kick in the ass laughing at you because they will charge (indirectly) you not only the price for the material used to build it, but also their intellectual property , sometimes raised exponentially. Serves you right. And if you throw away the old set a get a new one - another brand - it's time for another full force kick by the other brand owner.
The market managers rely on people like you who are attracted by all these sparkling and glittering gizmos , and while you are all hypnotized by this hacker, emule and false e-democracy sub-culture they are making all you "numbers" for their market stats.
You have cell phones, you have TV sets and maybe cable TV : good, very good : someone is getting revenue from your lifestyle doing simply NOTHING. Do you feel some envy mood for them , the rich ? I think so. I know very rich people (my premium, valued customers) who have magnificent houses, booats, hundreds of employees and shops, malls.... they simply earn a little from people like YOU, selling internet connectivity, online services, radio and TV programmes, goods at supermarkets, they teach in universities or are doctors, lawyers and so on. Welcome to the real world.
To cut off definitively this miserable thread, you have exposed your bad attitude and your mentality, and no one here seem to admire you. Probably the reason you haven't been banned is just because despite your way of thinking this forum is very democratic and sometimes there's something to learn from negative examples.
Just don't be surprised: when the shit hits the fan, you better find a shelter.
Finally, about riding the beast... I have my horses and ride everyday I have so much time.... Have you ever tried bullriding or rodeo? So nothing special for me.
One of these days I'll post some pics about the real life of service engineers... :D It's night here, I go out for a beer and see real people. BTW in the pub where I'm going, everything form the ECR to the audio system to the UPS in case of power failure, is sold/serviced by ME. Skoal !

(@admin, maybe this thread should be definitively closed ? Just leave a conclusive reply and then close, my fingers are killing me :? )

Cool, you get around. thats excelent. But you are way too pesemistic about the world we live in. Its about change and evolution. Things arnt getting worse, they are getting better. Right now gas prices are high, but only because a small group of Arabs are in control and it will take time to bust all that up.

As for me, I build and service the machines that build all that stuff that you service. I service and upgrade factory machines. CNC mills, lathes, grinders, EDM and die sinker machines, benders, welders, all running under computer comtrol. When these machines wont do, I design and build special machines to make the parts needed. These machines make the molds, stamp the parts, and weld the assemblies that make what you depend on. Even all your car, truck and plane parts are carved with the machines industry depends on me to service and support. I also am much cheaper than the factory and they are not my friend because my service takes from their pocket. So I have to be very smart as I am on my own. I can buy parts, but most often I will just fix the part that failed because the factory wants so much. My customers see the savings and call me back time and again.

Unlike you, I dont have a lot of free time. When I am not working, I am helping others do things. I help people with their cars, their homes, their boats, their computers, etc. I am always helping people. I do take time out to have fun but its limited to Friday night bar hopping twice a month. But I will get a free trip to florida when a buddy flys me down to help him fix up his boat.

So you see, we are simialar in a lot of ways but I am very friendly and tolerant of people and you beat them over their heads. And there is no real need for it. I am out of time to continue this, but all has been said and its not banned because people know its not too much to ask to be nice and cordial to people. And that is all I have been asking. If you dont have anything nice and constuctive to say. Why say anything at all? Its pointless to be so condecending no matter how smart you are.
