IDE to SATA converter

October 21st, 2008, 5:46

Didnt want to unscrew a small new pc and therefore connected the old IDE drive
(Samsung 160GB) with an IDE to SATA converter to the new pure SATA PC.

I had to use Erd Commander to open the password protected user data
and to copy it to the new pc.

But..... Allthough the drive was detected / shown in the drive list of the BIOS
it was not present within the Erd commander environment.

Anyone a clue why not?

I found a way to copy the data on an other computer - directly connected as
IDE drive - AND using the Erd Commander. There I copied the data onto a SATA
drive - and that drive was then recognised within Erd Commander on the
new pc.

To be clear - there is no problem any more, but what causes the problem
with that IDE/SATA converter?

Might be a cheap or faulty converter...Most of em are poorly made with cheap chips and bad solder joints.
