Hello everybody,

I'm about to buy a 1TB HDD and cannot decide which model to get. Since i could not find much information about the WD10EURS i'd like to ask here if anyone knows the difference between this drive and WD10EARS. I'm looking not for low access time and high transfer rates but low noise and temperature. My aim is to use it for recording some old VHS tapes, maybe some MiniDV as well and transcode them on it. After that the HDD will be mainly used for archive and download purpose. So no OS will be installed on it. I look forward in getting a short answer to my very first question here.

I would not recommand WD to do this one on. They have a very high rate of failure. I would more than likely look at a Samsung or Hitachi if this is what you want to do.

So you would favour a Hitachi 1000GB HDS721010CLA332 instead of a WD10EARS ? Do latter fail so often ? Some people say the Hitachi reaches 50°C under heavy access which is rather warm.

I've had several WD drives from 1990 on and all are still alive. Samsung i had bought 2 SP1614C in 2003. The one failed after 2 years, the other still is ok with some SMART errors. The one i've learned is that everything depends on how lucky you are but i must admit that i fear to buy again any Samsung HDD.
