Hello guys :D

beeing tryin to do research and searchin but i had no luck

I'm running windows 7 64b ultimate edition

I had an old Hdd WS wd800bb 80gb ide HDD lying around so i bought little case and put it together.

Now my problem is that every time I connect The ext HDD via USB windows slows down, the mouse takes long to move around the screen and I have to click like 20 times for a folder to open. I tried the ext HDD on my laptop, thats running XP and no probs at all. At work with win xp no problems either

Do you guys know why this could be happening? :?:

that will be the program built into windows called Background intelligent transfer service
which slows down external hard drives.

do the following

Go to
1. Control panel
2. System and Maintenance
3. Administrative tools
4. Run services shortcut
Once the services program loads find the services called Background intelligent transfer service and stop it
also right click on the same service and click properties then change the start value to manual or disabled this should also fix the network problem and USB copy and paste

Used to do that due to the main hard drive going into sleep mode and not waking up properly. I have 3 hdds in total, will try unplugging 2 and see what happens

The thing is that the external drive has its own wall socket power supply :?: :?:

Some more info:

I have windows installed in an IDE drive and my docs in a 2nd IDE drive. Then I have a 3rd Sata drive for all the movies, etc

I unplugged the IDE my docs drive and switched on the external drive and the mouse did not slow down, only the clicking of the mouse was affected. But i transferred a few files @ 30mb/s

I went on and unplugged the Sata drive but it was the same as the first scenario.

I assume that my pc does not like more than 2 IDE drives??

Is there any Bios setting that i can change for this?

it very possible something to do with the hardware in windows 7 64bit ultimate edition

some hardware does not like the 64bit platform

the reason why your not having the same issue in windows xp is because its based 32bit

do you know anyone who has windows 7 and you can try it on there machine
that will tell you right away.

also worth downloading the program below and run it to see if the drive is ok

ok download this program below its called tera copy

see if that helps this helps me a lot for transfering from usb to the main hard drive

http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.php

TeraCopy is a compact program designed to copy and move files at the maximum possible speed, providing the user with a lot of features:

Copy files faster. TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times. Asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives.
Pause and resume file transfers. Pause copy process at any time to free up system resources and continue with a single click.
Error recovery. In case of copy error, TeraCopy will try several times and in the worse case just skip the file, not terminating the entire transfer.
Interactive file list. TeraCopy shows failed file transfers and lets you fix the problem and recopy only problem files.
Shell integration. TeraCopy can completely replace Explorer copy and move functions, allowing you work with files as usual.
Full Unicode support.
Windows 7 x64 support.
