Maybe you could use the cheaper Maxtor tool for your WD work. :o :? :lol:

MRT (Maxtor HDD Repair Tool):
http://hdd.chinahdd.cn/List.asp?C-1-11.html
http://hdd.chinahdd.cn/UpFiles/Article/ ... 204125.jpg

Just to clear up the confusion, page 2 of the "WDR-UDMA (Western Digital Hard Disk Repair Software) User Manual Version 3.0" states that "since Western Digital had taken over Maxtor in 2006, it has enjoyed a larger amount of users."

That said, I'm curious enough to want to buy the suite of tools, if only the manufacturer would clarify exactly what you get. Unfortunately the web site is extremely poorly designed and maintained, and the demo AVIs are all in Chinese. It's a real shame because the tools look like they may actually be very useful.

Tools and program for DR are not cheap. I have no idea about WDR but only what is said on their website which does not say much.

If you can get past the bad English manuals that Salvation Data supplies and you can figure out their program and how it works this might be a cheap starting point for you.

There is ddrescue which is a free program for cloning but keep in mind this can not clone drives with surface damage and bad sectors or slow read but it can do a decent job for what you might want.

Last off there is Google you can use this to find what you are looking for and see what your price range is. You will have to contact companies and work with them so your first place to start is with Google and email and see what you can find out from them and how much they charge and it cost. But getting into DR is not cheap and if you want to do this you need to invest in some good program and tools in order to do the job correctly and do not forget it is not your data at risk it is data from a client. You want to not risk their data if you are to do this work. it is not an easy job to do this and takes years of research and knowledge to be able to recover hard drive that have failed. Some jobs are simple and just require cloning and some program to find the work but this does not happen too often. Most job are complex and very hard to figure out and take a lot of knowledge to fix the drive so you can read it again and find your data on it.

I'd bet that they just took the intro section of STR-UDMA (their Seagate tool) and just "Find ... Replace..." on Notepad the word "Seagate" with "Western Digital"... :mrgreen:

WDR and STR are good tools for basic functions, like reading-writing rom etc, judging by their price. Of course, support is absent, there is a live chat board where someone *could* answer some questions for you, but basically you're on your own.

I realise that you may not be a native English speaker, but see ...

Agreed, but how do you then explain a screenshot of a Maxtor tool shown working with a WD drive?
http://hdd.chinahdd.cn/UpFiles/Article/ ... 204125.jpg

In fact there are so many errors on the China HDD Union web site that it makes me wonder whether the site has been vandalised.

For example, the following page describes what is possible with "HDD Repair Tools - WDR":
http://hdd.chinahdd.cn/List.asp?C-1-9.html

However, at the bottom of the page is ...

====================================================================================
The aforementioned functions are the brief parts of HD Doctor for WD. The detailed functions can be available for you only when you get our HDD repair tools.

Connection of HDD repair tools - HD Doctor for WD

Simply connect the WDR to any kind of computer owning a USB socket (supports USB 1.1 and above protocols) and one of the following Microsoft OS: Windows 98/Windows 2000/Windows XP/Windows 2003, and then you can start working. Full English interface.
====================================================================================

AIUI "HD Doctor for WD" is a Salvation Data trademark. Therefore prospective customers could be forgiven for wondering whether WDR is a Salvation Data rip-off.

Furthermore, it would appear that the earlier version of WDR connected via a USB port (???) whereas WDR-UDMA connects via SATA or IDE.

However, the user manual for STR3000-UDMA implies that this product connects via the serial console only. So what does "UDMA" or "UMDA" (sic) actually refer to?

BTW, I really do want to try these products, but alarm bells are going off everywhere.

HD Doctor for WD was a pirated copy of SD's tool. Probably produced by same people who now produce WDR and STR. Having said that, the answer could be the same; they just copy... replace... their HD Doctor tool information for WDR :mrgreen:

I own both these products. As I said they're good for basic functions, some bugs, but good for starters.
