First of all, please forgive me if this question is newbish. I tried to do a search but couldn't quite find the answer.

I just inherited a 1T hard drive. Look at the picture. On the right is a standard 750gb 2.5 hard drive. On the left is a twice as thick hard drive that is 1T.

Image

I can't seem to find any case online that fits the one on the left because it's too thick. What should I be searching for? It's not quite a 2.5 and it's not quite a 3.5 either.

@hawk_wd:

Yes, the photo isn't showing - I found the URL is this:

https://photos-1.dropbox.com/i/xl/fEmj5jhnfCg5N5GLzhbVmgVMVJQq-U2aR5PRQyvi8KI/38673648/1324170000/5aff751/IMG_20111216_184313.jpg

@cannibal:

That drive on the left is a 2.5" drive (it would be nice if you gave us the specific model number :) ), but it seems to be one of the early 1TB models, which were thicker than the "typical" 9.5mm (which looks like the thickness of the one on the right).

If you want a case, then you'll need to measure that drive's thickness, and check that parameter for any 2.5" case you consider. Or consider a "docking station", as those often have fewer limitations about drive thickness (although some still have a limitation). Or use adapters to convert to 3.5" drive size and then mount the drive+adapter into a 3.5" drive case. Those are the options that I can suggest - other people may suggest more.

I was referring to 9.5mm as the typical height (thickness) of 2.5" drives in general, and this is often the height limit for 2.5" drive cases - exactly as you have found! But to answer your question...

Yes. Google is your friend, if you want to check :)

@dobrevjetser:

Yes! Spinpoint M8.

I don't know how many are being sold, as they aren't cheap! :) Did you get many for recovery?

First disk develloped bad sectors within a few weeks. Replaced it with spare. So far, so good. :D

Thanks for that info - sorry to hear that one developed bad sectors so quickly :( It was a good decision to get a spare!

My new spare (MK1059GSM) developped bad smart after three weeks.
Had to reset it with UDMA.
These recent 1 TB drives are really bad quality.

If it is about my own hdd's, i stay the hell away from Hitachis and Samsung's. The last Samsung i had with clients' backups (a HD103SJ) suddenly identified as CLOVER CD103 and bricked.

I now only trust expensive wd's (black) for 3.5" and Fujitsus for 2.5".

I have a lot of bad WD and fujitsu too :)
There is no brand that is better than the others.
So i keep 4 backups on 4 different media on two different locations with three different softwares just to be sure...

Indeed, but even the best backup strategy on (f.e.) wd green drives would be a bit ironic... :mrgreen:
