a little off topic, that's why I threw it in general forum. I bought a t862 rework station for our electronics shop.

we have very little experience doing rework, we heated up one dv laptop video chip, worked like a charm. The first xbox I tried, no change in symptoms.

before, I'd plug the xbox in and get the left two lights of the rrod on which indicates a heat issue from what I've read. they would come on right away after plugging it in so I kind of think it was a seating issue. anyway I heated both chips to 250 for two minutes, they soaked up all the rosin. Same result. so I tried again, 300 for two minutes, tested it, than another 3 minutes at 300 with the same result, left two of the rrod were lit up.

the only thing I can think we did different was with the laptop, we could put the heat sink on right away, the xbox takes a little longer with the heat sink being screwed in from the bottom of the board. Any ideas as to what the issue would be? I don't see any burnt chips or anything like that.

My guess is that the T862 is not capable of reflowing XBox CPUs or GPUs. Even if you set the IR temp control to 300, the solder balls might not reach 220 degrees C. And the preheater is too small for such boards.

RROD seems to be an issue with the first gen xbox.
