My earliest harddrives are all maxtors, nothing particularly impressive, nothing particularly disappointing. Then in about 10 years ago, I bought my first seagate because maxtor was having its downs.

About 8.5 years later, seagate failed me for the first time (SMART fail). I wrapped it with an antistatic bag, locked it in my basement, and forgot all about it. Then I bought my first caviar green, and now it is starting to have minor, but potentially disastrous failures.

I bought a whole new 1TB caviar blue that I'm using now, this one changed my whole perspective. It is fast, it is stable, but it is loud and hot. So hot that I had to fix a fan for it.

Then quite by chance, I hooked my old seagate on my comp again. Viola, the smart all passed, scanned with hdtune, not a scratch. The seagate miraculously healed itself.

That is 10 freakin years people, (given 1.5 years to rest ) that is impressive. I refuse to consider seagate at first because of the firmware problem and the noise.

I'm not trying to bash WD here, I think WD has a very swift marketing strategy, and I love the green series because it's quite, it's cool and it's big, but hey, durability is a nerd's best friend. I have business corporations with WD before, I met their sales rep before as well as having phone conversation with the marketing director for US/Canada, (yep, they are that down to earth) all quite pleasant. But 10 years, that's just irrefutable. The seagate has gone right up in my category.

I know the sample probably is too small. So I wanna know what you guys think?

I also agree.

I also believe WD's RE* series are state of the art, whereas green's are plain garbage.
