So I have been flashing SAS HDD's using sq_untils I have had a lot of success when the firmware is already available to flash in a .LOD file however I am having an issue with a couple of different drives.

I find I have to flash HDD's after formatting to 512 block size when they have come out of Hitachi servers, so they have the Hitachi firmware on them such as 7FA6 on a ST6000NM0034 drive, I have found firmware from Seagate to flash to E005 or E0G5, when I try this I get this response;

Write buffer cmd: 3b 05 00 00 00 00 19 60 00 00
write buffer: Descriptor format, current; Sense key: Illegal Request
ASC=26, vendor specific qualification ASCQ=99 (hex)
Descriptor type: Field replaceable unit
code=0x3f
Descriptor type: Vendor specific [0x80]
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
bad field in Write buffer cdb

Can someone point me to the right post or help me with this error.

Thank you in advance.

I'm having this exact same issue. Did you ever find a solution?

As of yet I have had no success, the LOD file from Seagate isn't giving a successful flash on these drives.

Did either of you find a solution for these 6TB drives?

One way is to find an identical model drive with the original firmware, connect JTAG to it and dump the firmware off. Then use that dump to reprogram your drives' firmware over JTAG. Another way is to JTAG dump your existing firmware and reverse engineer enough of it to understand how they capacity limited the drive, and undo the limitation.

I have the same problem, Can the 7FA6 bios be hex edited, to change the vendor code to match the other one link here https://forum.hddguru.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=20868 or can this script help https://forum.hddguru.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=28252, and I also found this but no info how to flash it in Linux https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=vd3rj. I know how to use a spi flasher can i dump the firmware with that, I found donor boards with right flash chip but cost around 50$ but that kind a lot but i have 2 drive. I have formatted one to 512, with sg_format but it doesnt work, i can right the partition table.

the key on the 520 is different then the 4kn but the 4kn is the same as the regular seagate update, 512E and 4kn

don't want to be very negative but:
-nope, the serial flash contains critical, unique adaptive data, so completely changing it from a different drive only results in a non-functional unit.
-Moreover, if these are preserved, drive will still fail to init because the main fw is in the SA (on the platters), which obviously won't match the rom version, so won't be started. And ever if it was, you would have the same drive as before.
-Feeding it with a matching fw update could work, but there are version checks for those as well, so it's not very probable either.
-I doubt you would be able to reformat it after the fw update, since such operations require unlocking diag commands.

I was thinking that would happen in the firmware up date found the checklist

this is what the drive is Hitachi VSP 5560075-A S2F-H6R0SS 6TB 7.2K 12Gb 3.5 SAS HDD ST6000NM0034, not sure why Hitachi used seagate hdd when they make there own

I was thinking of swapping this in the firmware, then tryng to upgrade with normal seagate update

the data you quote here is a part of the bootfw, not even the full container. This goes nowhere, i recommend experimenting with it without posting all the ideas, just post the final conclusion, please.

Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform use both Seagate and HGST drives. It also use some another drives, such Zeus IOPS etc.
This system use non-standart algorithm for writing to drives. Such SCSI command as WRITE10, WRITE12, WRITE16, etc not used in this drives. It's a "firmware lock". ROM - is a little part of firmware. It need to initial boot. Main code - into HBA. Leave PCB alone. Nobody will restore the damaged ROM.

Firendly note: I found ST6000NM0034 includes 2 "types": MLK0034 & NM0034. And 2 rates: 6 Gb/s(Dell MS2D) & 12 Gb/s(Dell MS85).
