Gentlemen,
I'd like to switch all the critics into a positive way:
If you're to decide, what features would you add to R-Studio?
Except RAID with delays, as they're under development.

Get a mirror detector, something where you put two regions in, and it says "these regions are 99.5% identical".

Perhaps the ability to handle linux based soft raids automatically, just like R-Studio is so quickly able to handle Windows Dynamic disks.

As a matter of fact, one thing very useful option if possible to deploy which is the following:

Sometimes we do RAW recovery and we get files recovered, well some of them are WORKING
and most are not working based on Headers (which i do)

if you deploy an option to scan those FOUND files and compare it with R-Studio Headers which already exists in its own DB
and leave only working files that would be really BINGO

instead of looking inside

this is most used in RAID and also in regular cases.

Simple Option (i hope) to scan found files and eliminate those non-working and leaving the working files visible

What do you think?

More filesystems. XFS, Reiser, etc

If you're feeling adventurous VMFS, Veritas, etc (I don't know of ANY good tool with support for these)

Saving disk images as NTFS sparse files

Ability to view recalculated RAID5 missing disk as if it were an actual disk, and scroll through it, etc

interestingly, drc, we've been discussing VMFS here today. A query came in like "we have crashed VMFS, can you recover?", and no we don't handle this. So we were like, "sure we can do this for the future, but is it worth it?", quick look-see and lo and behold there are three versions of VMFS, and one request in two years. So we thought like, nah, that's not on the list of our priorities.

I personally was of the opinion like, if they have VMFS, then they have ESX servers and all the expensive stuff and staff, and sure there will be backups. So as the filesystem becomes more high-end, the recovery requests become less frequent and more complex. Hence the less incentive to do it. This is probably why you don't see anything good to recover these.

A new version of R-Studio with a long-awaited feature: support for RAIDs with parity delays. Well, we didn’t want to introduce a new control, so you’ll have to do a simple calculation to get the number of the rows in the table by multiplying the number of disks by the delay size. Read more in our help: RAID5 with Parity Delays Operations. Also, now R-Studio has R-Studio Agents for the major PC OS: Windows, MacOS, and Linux. + some additional improvements and bugfixes.
More interesting news is to come.

Thanks for the add-on. Not sure that I agree with not adding a simple drop-down box for parity delay. If anyone has an active case to test this out, I'd be curious to hear how it works.

You may recover data from crashed VMs using R-Studio:
1. If you have the Technician license or will to sacrifice a hardware code, start the VM using the startup ISO image of R-Studio Emergency. You may save files from VM using the network capabilities of R-Studio Emergency.
2. If you have R-Studio Network, start the VM using the ISO image of R-Studio Agent Emergency and connect it to R-Studio.
3. If you have R-Studio local, start the VM using the ISO image of R-Studio Agent Emergency, connect it to R-Studio, and create the image of the VM's disk.
I tested all that using Oracle Virtual Box and a Mac OS X VM.
Network data recovery is a very useful feature indeed.

A maintenance build of R-Studio that fixes several bugs, including freeze/crash during file enumeration on a disk.

Not sure if that has been requested ever, but is it possible to implement an horizontal scrolling bar in the error log view?

Frequently, users do not really care to save the error log, but rather just quickly scroll through the files in the log view. Sometimes the folder/subfolder path is so long that the view is obscured.

See attachment, please.

Yea, a good point. Consider it in our nearest to-do list.

Why dont you make it auto save log for later viewing option?

It exists on the Settings -> Log tab.

That's great. We are waiting for some thing new. Does it recover lost data from SD Card also ?

marksmith wrote:Does it recover lost data from SD Card also ?

Answer depends on the real cause of the problem... If the SD card is still functioning and readable, then yes, you can try R-Studio (and other logical recovery software). If the SD card is not functioning correctly, then different recovery techniques would be needed (see previous threads in the Flash memory part of this forum).

I think greatest challenge for r-studio is --
1) High CPU utilization -- program hangs sometimes & if pc is restarted everything is gone
2) Too many false entried -- program sometimes shows PB of data size
3) result is inconsistent with corrupt data -- for same disk GDB results far better than r-studio
4) Free updates - if GDB & other programs can give life time free updates ,why r-studio forces its customers to buy for updates?

R-studio pls listen to our concerns seriously

Well, I would buy it, but I can accept that I'm in the minority. My thinking was just that if open source (but of limited usefulness) tools already exist (and they do for VMFS) then it can't be too hard to incorporate support. I understand nobody has the time to reverse engineer crazy filesystems you never see just for the two customers who would actually care.

I would also love to see something that was capable of working with JFS1/JFS2 (the actual AIX implementations, not whatever it is that linux calls JFS but is actually neither of these), but I know that may go more into the latter category.
