Tools for hard drive diagnostics, repair, and data recovery

Hi, I've an issue with my internal HDD. It's a Hitachi Travelstar 5K750 and is triggering a soft clicking noise. This click happens usually when the laptop is idle but also when it's been on a while. The clicks can go from intermittent (every 10-15 secs.) to quite rampant (every 2 secs.) From what I have gathered the Hard Drive is parking its heads to saver power but I've not experienced this on other laptops and the sound is most infuriating.
Putting the laptop under heavy use can silence the clicking but it is still there and quite torturous when I'm using Word or Photoshop as concentration is effected by this irritating sound. I have resorted to running HD Tune or running SMART as a heavy usage program to stop the clicking but this is only a temporary solution.
There is absolutely no performance issues with the HDD and I have done a series of tests to check it out. I have been in touch with Hitachi who tell me to return the laptop to the shop I got it but I've been told in response to that there is no problem with the machine.
Does anybody have any solution to this?. Laptop cost over €900(US$1200) and it seems quite a shoddy piece of hardware for this price.

My guess is that it is more about windows caching to the drive and what you are hearing is the heads moving. You might want to get more memory or try using a USB thumb drive for "SpeedBoost" to see if that helps reduce the caching.

Hi lcoughey, I'd be surprised if it was memory because the laptop is only a couple of months old.
