Bad Sector Tools

April 26th, 2014, 10:44

How do these tools compare? Is one tool any more thorough than another? I've used HDAT2 in the past and just wondering. It works on my USB flash drive on boot.

Also is there any point in zeroing out a drive before using? Some people claim to do this, but is there any point unless you just want to delete the data? I've bought two new HDDs and just want to check the integrity of them first and setup them up for usage. CrystalDiskInfo shows them as fine, but I'd like to check the sectors with another tool.

You could use MHDD to scan the drive for "slow" sectors.

A zero fill can force the drive to remap "pending" sectors, ie those sectors that are bad and are waiting to be reallocated.
