MHDD don't detect external HDD

July 30th, 2014, 16:50

Hi
I have an external hard disk (WD 1 terabyte)
MHDD doesn't detect it. I use it from Hiren Boot cd.
I also entered in the bios and I confirmed "ide" in the "sata controller" option.
MHDD only see the internal Hdd of my pc.
I though it was a problem relatinf to the exFat filesystem but MHDD doesn't see this hdd also if unformatted (Raw)

P.S. In this software there is written "slave device not supported". I don't know what it means. I don't know if it's a message that is always showed or that compares only when there is a problem...

If this is an external hdd - connected via USB to a pc or laptop - it will never work.

MHDD will detect IDE hdd (and SATA hdd when bios is switched to either ide or
compatible mode).
It will never detect hdd in AHCI bios mode and definitely no hdd connected via USB.

I suggest to check your external (USB?) hdd with available software from WD
Download a test tool from wd support home page - and check your hdd accordingly.

Everything else might harm your external hdd.

It's a message that always shows up to remind the user that MHDD only supports drives configured as the master on an IDE channel.

From the MHDD FAQ (viewtopic.php?f=16&t=5) ...

Q: MHDD does not see my drive.
A1: Check Q6 first
A2: If your drive is SLAVE, you have to switch it to MASTER first. I removed SLAVE-devices support from MHDD.
A3: Actually, there is a way of accessing slave devices in MHDD. Press SHIFT+F3, and then look for master hard drive number on the same channel. For example, if the master hard drive number is "3", enter "4" to select slave drive on that cable.

My hdd is connected with a usb 2.0 port, so will it never be detected by MHDD?

Really? None has ever said me this!
In fact I think that my hdd is decreasing its speed and it's damaging after the many scans of of these tools.
AND YET today all the hdds are made in the same way AND these programs are reliable, safe and so good just because so "universal"...

Thanks

The usb cable of my hdd seems ok
fzabkar wrote:A2: If your drive is SLAVE, you have to switch it to MASTER first.
How can I switch the hdd to master? Maybe in the bios..

I will try it and I'll let you know.

@Mich-C, my answer addressed your question regarding drives configured as "SLAVE" devices. It does not apply to USB devices, only to devices attached to IDE ports on the motherboard.

Sorry fzabkar, I am confused by all these new words :D
Anyway I found a driver that makes it possible to access USB devices on MHDD (http://hddguru.com/software/2006.02.09- ... OS-Driver/)
Will it work for you? I think yes but in a slower way... and how could I acces this "config.sys" file?

The following thread is very informative:
http://www.computing.net/answers/dos/us ... 13447.html

When I was playing with USB drives under DOS, I found that version 2.15 of Panasonic's USPASPI.SYS driver in conjunction with the "Motto Hairu" DOS Driver, Di1000dd.SYS, enabled me to access an external USB 2.0 HD from within DOS.

My config.sys file had these two lines:

    device=USBASPI.SYS
    device=DI1000DD.SYS

The relevant files were extracted from these archives:
http://panasonic.co.jp/pcc/products/dri ... 2h_usb.exe
http://web.archive.org/web/200306100137 ... 2h_usb.exe
http://www.stefan2000.com/darkehorse/PC ... mhairu.zip
http://web.archive.org/web/201306142325 ... mhairu.zip

My motherboard had an SiS 7002 USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller.

The CONFIG.SYS file is a text file that is placed in the root directory.

You helped me a lot, Thanks! And sorry for my very late reply (over a month  )

I solved in another way.
I am sure that my external Hdd has damaged sectors but...I don't understand a thing...

I scanned my HDD for 3 months and A software says that is perfect, another one employ years for scan. Now i tryed one that said me the number of the damged sector immediately, without any scan
Now I know that the HDD has 39347 damaged sectors.

Can I still use this HDD in these condition? (it's damaged for less than 0,0001%)
Hdd's monitoring softwares says me "Warning!Danger!..."
And yet the HDD perfectly works (also if in a slow way)

I wouldn't trust that drive.

It sounds like SMART is reporting a large number of reallocated and/or pending sectors. Reallocated sectors are bad sectors that have been replaced with good spares, so your software doesn't see a problem. However, it is only a matter of time before your drive fails.
