Tools for hard drive diagnostics, repair, and data recovery

Aside from pixrecovery, which simply doesn't seem to work, can anyone recommend a decent alternative?
I have recovered a number of .jpg files but they are too corrupt to be displayed.
Perhaps it's merely a bit out of sequence, but either way, there are far too many for me to go through manually.
Thanks

Been there, tried it - as useless as everything else I've tried so far.
